Joanie Engquist, 67

Stickney, SD
June 23, 1956 - March 9, 2024

Joanie Engquist, 67 of Stickney, passed away Saturday March 9, 2024 at her home with her family surrounding her. Joanie was the beloved wife and best friend of Mark and cherished mother to Jake, (Maranda), Josh, and Jess (Kyra).

Joanie (Waidler) Engquist was born June 23, 1956 in Long Island, New York to Bob and Ann (McCail) Waidler. She graduated from Copiague High School. She met Mark Engquist when he was stationed at West Point in 1978 and they later married on May 7, 1983 in Copiague, New York. Their union brought three outstanding boys who "kept things interesting" for Joanie and Mark; Jake, Josh, and Jess. As the boys grew up Joanie loved to watch them play sports, attending as many events as she could. Joanie's favorite was baseball, even though she married a hockey guy from Minnesota, had three boys who all played hockey and was looking forward to watching her Grandchildren play hockey. Growing up on Long Island, New York, she was a Yankees fan true and blue. She was known to root for the Minnesota Twins, as long as they weren't playing the Yankees.  Joanie loved to go out in the boat with Mark while he fished and she looked at the beautiful cabins.

In life there are battles and sometimes you get knocked down. You only have one choice and that's to keep fighting, and that's exactly what Joanie did for the last year and half, she's been fighting like a "champion prize fighter." She would want everyone to make the best of each day.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband Mark, sons Jake (Maranda) Engquist of Hebron, IN, Josh Engquist of Stickney, SD, and Jess (Kyra) Engquist of Turtle Lake, WI. Joanie's pride and joy were her Grandchildren Tatum (8), Paislee (5) and Adler (1). She is also survived by brother Bob Waidler of Long Island, NY and a sister Nancy Prouty of Clayton, NY.

Joanie was preceded in death by her parents, Mark's parents and a brother, Billy.

There will be a Memorial Service held on Saturday March 23, 2024, 3pm, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Stickney, SD. Another Celebration of Life will take place at a later date in Richmond, MN.

Services have been entrusted to Koehn Bros. Funeral Home (Stickney).
