A Celebration of Life will be 4:00 p.m. Friday, April 8, 2022, at Wenner Funeral Home in Richmond, MN. Friends and family may gather at the funeral home one hour before the service.

Mel was born on April 8, 1940, in St. Augusta, MN to Raymond and Florence (Eversman) Lommel. He graduated from Tech High School. Mel proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1960-1964, then earned a degree from the St. Cloud Business College.  He returned to St. Cloud and was united in marriage to JoAnn M. Scholen on June 17, 1961, in St. Joseph Church, Waite Park, MN. They resided in St. Augusta for several years before moving to Luxemburg.

Mel worked for Cold Spring Granite Company for 48 years and while with the company he traveled in the U.S. with wife JoAnn, making many special friends along the way.  He retired as General Manager of the Memorial Division and was admired and loved by many.

Mel enjoyed many activities including fishing, hunting, trips to Alaska and Canada with friends, snowmobiling, 4-wheeling, coaching little league, and playing softball for Seagull Marine. He treasured spending time with family and friends at the cabin.

Mel is survived by his wife of 60 years, JoAnn; daughters, Julie (Bill) Becker, Jackie Lommel (Chad Molitor), Stacy (Ray) Gregory; son, Ryan (Missy); grandchildren, Elizbeth (Ted) Freese, Melissa Schmitt, Nathan and Justin Becker, Nicky (Andrew) Bell, Deanna (Kohlton) Schmidt; great-grandchildren, Carson, and Weston Freese, Eliza, Myla, Clara Bell; and many family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Maynard.

A heartfelt thank you to the CentraCare Hospice team of caregivers for all the love and support they have shared with Mel and his family.

Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.
