William “Bill” Herges, age 66
Kimball
July 2, 1944 – December 31, 2010
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Kimball, MN for William “Bill” Herges, age 66, who died Friday at the St. Cloud Hospital. Burial will be in the St. Anne’s Parish Cemetery, Kimball.
Relatives and friends may call from 4:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Wenner Funeral Home in Richmond (151 Oakwood Ave. S.E.). Parish Prayers will be at 5:00p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Visitation will continue from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. Wednesday morning at St. Anne’s Church in Kimball.
Bill was born in Rockville, MN to George and Marie (Worm) Herges. He married Nancy Donabauer on May 4, 1968 in Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Rockville. Bill loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a farmer first and foremost! Bill thoroughly enjoyed his life on the farm, working the land, and he could fix anything. Bill also worked for 15 years at Burlington Northern in St. Cloud. Bill’s father-in-law took him hunting his first time back in 1967, to find out he really enjoyed it. He was a member of St. Anne Parish.
Survivors include his loving wife of nearly 42 years, Nancy; children, Lonnie (Michelle) of Richmond, Joe of St. Cloud and Kelly of St. Cloud; grandchildren, Blake and Trent; brothers, Richard (Carol) of Ohio and Alvin (Elaine) of St. Joseph.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 infant sisters.
Katlyn Lee Dold, age 21
Sartell
September 17, 1989 - December 30, 2010
Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Katlyn Lee Dold, 21 of Sartell will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Sartell. Katlyn died on Thursday, December 30, 2010 from injuries received in a motor vehicle accident. Reverend Lauren Germann will officiate. Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery in St. Cloud.
Family and friends may call between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Monday and after 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday at the gathering space at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Sartell. Parish prayers will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday at the church.
Katlyn was born on September 17, 1989 in St. Cloud, Minnesota to Gene and Diane (Fuchs) Dold. She graduated from Sartell High School in 2008 and was currently a junior at St. Cloud State University. Katlyn was employed at Soleil Bronze Tanning Spas. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Parish in Sartell.
Katlyn enjoyed family trips, time spent with family and friends, running and working out. She will be remembered as a loving daughter, amazing auntie and wonderful sister.
Katlyn is survived by her parents, Gene and Diane of Sartell; sister, Carrie (Allan) Karki of Sartell; nephews and niece Chandler, Keegan and Avah Karki; special friend, Joe Renner; grandparents; John and Joan Fuchs of Cold Spring; and many relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Scott in 1990; grandparents, Ben and Lucille Dold; uncles, Dan Fuchs and Dave Leither.

Burlin Ratliff, age 84
Cold Spring

Funeral Service will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 7, 2011 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Cold Spring, MN for Burlin Ratliff, age 84, who died Thursday at the home of his daughter. Burial will be in the Gloria Dei Lutheran Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may call from 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Wenner Funeral Home in Cold Spring. There will be a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. at the Wenner Funeral Home.
Burlin was born in Lawrence County, Kentucky to Bascom and Grace (Lewis) Ratliff.
He worked as a coal miner in the hills of Kentucky. Burlin taught himself to play the guitar in his late 40’s. He loved music, singing with various gospel groups in the south. Burlin’s grandchildren were the sparkle in his eye. Whenever the kids were around, he was smiling!
Survivors include his children, Mary Dale, Bascom (Janice), Eugene, Carl, Cathy (Herb) Schulz, Jerry (Gloria), Alice, Clark, Roger, Janelle (Bruce) Balling, and Diane (Danny) Taynor; 26 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; siblings, Julie, Lonnie, Darrell, Donlee, Larry, Olgamae, and Roy.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Bernard, Edgil, Harlin, infant brother, Willie and 3 grandsons.
Daniel “Dan” Reme, age 51
St. Cloud
April 9, 1959 – December 23, 2010
Funeral Services will be 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at the Wenner Funeral Home in Cold Spring, MN for Daniel “Dan” Reme, age 51, who died Thursday at the St. Cloud Hospital.
Visitation with family and friends will be from 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Tuesday evening prior to the service at the Wenner Funeral Home in Cold Spring.
Dan was born in Forest Lake, MN to Irvin and Shirley (Telschow) Reme. He married Debbie Biendara on February 10, 1979 in Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Cold Spring. Dan was employed as a truck driver. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, hunting, fishing, watching ball games, snowmobiling and four wheeling.
Survivors include his loving wife of 31 years, Debbie; children, Tanya (Chris) Ahlbaum of Champlin, Travis (Sara) of St. Cloud; grandchildren, Tucker, Taylor, Easton and Griffin; parents, Irvin and Shirley; sisters, Penny, Sherry, Carrie and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Roman “Romie” Gertken, age 59

Romie was born in Richmond, MN to Benedict and Bernelda (Mehr) Gertken. He married Sandra Butala on June 26, 1990 in South Dakota. Romie served in the National Guard from 1969 – 1971. He was a heavy equipment crane operator for Thorstads Construction from Maynard, MN. Romie enjoyed hunting, fishing, four wheeling, camping, playing cards, eating fish and drinking beer with family and friends. He was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Parish.
Survivors include his wife, Sandy; children, Scott (Amanda), Greg (Kara) and Glen (Christine); stepchildren, Kim (Mark) Craig, Vickie (Chris) Demuth, Sherry Kollmann; grandchildren, Breanna, Zachary, Samuel, Sebastian, Gabriel; step-grandchildren, Brooke, Brandon, Courtney, Christopher, Brock; mother, Bernelda; siblings, Carol (Gary) Chihos, Frank (Deb) Gertken, Brenda (John) Clemen, and Benedict (Sharon) Gertken.

Mabel “Mae” Goede, age 79
Cold Spring

Memorial Service will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 22, 2010 at Peace Lutheran Church in Cold Spring, MN for Mabel “Mae” Goede, age 79, who died Sunday at the St. Cloud Hospital. Inurnment will be at a later date in Jackson, Minnesota.
A gathering of relatives and friends will be from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. at the Peace Lutheran Church prior to the service Wednesday afternoon. Arrangements were entrusted with the Wenner Funeral Home, Cold Spring.
Mae was born in Dolliver, Iowa to Percy and Myrtie (Morrill) Whitehill. She married Bill Goede on August 20, 1960 in Jackson, MN. Mae taught elementary education in Ringsted and Estherville Iowa and Morristown and Jackson Minnesota. After moving to Cold Spring Mae was a library aide at Cold Spring Elem. School and a teacher’s aide at St. Boniface Elem. in Cold Spring and John Clark Elem. in Rockville. Mae looked forward to her various bible studies. She enjoyed shopping for her granddaughters, reading, playing cards, community theatre and bowling. Mae was a member of the First United Methodist Church in St. Cloud, Cold Spring American Legion Auxiliary, Cold Spring Lioness’s, and a Stroke Support Group through her church.
Survivors include her loving husband of 50 years, Bill; children, Steve of St. Cloud, Susan of Broomfield, CO, Chuck (Jennifer) of Elk River; 4 granddaughters, Ashley, Hannah, Ella Marie Goede and Ella Jo Harris.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Alice Abel and Arlene Guerdet.
Dorothy “Dot” Uken, age 87
Richmond
November 23, 1923 – December 17, 2010
A prayer service will be held at a later date in Arizona where Dot lived for many years. She was born in Winner, SD to Henry and Rose (Wiedman) Lueken. Dot married Joseph L. Uken on January 23, 1945 in Winner SD.
Dot was head pastry cook at Southern State College, Springfield, SD and she enjoyed spending time with her family, hiking and traveling.
Survivors include her children, Sharyn (Ed) Babcock of Cold Spring, MN and Sandra (Larry) Haima of Albany OR; 6 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; sisters, Gertrude Honke of Atlantic, IA and Cecelia Larsen of Mesa, AZ.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; parents; brothers, Norbert and Raymond; sisters, Alma and Alice.
Special thanks to the wonderful staff at the Mother Lucille Assisted Living Home in Richmond, MN for the loving care they provided in her later years.

Dorine was born in Pelican Rapids, MN to Michael and Veronica (Harmeling) Kortuem. She married Jim Pauly on July 3, 1980 in Minneapolis. Dorine graduated from Pelican Rapids High School and Anoka-Hennepin Technical College. She was a supervisor at the JC Penney store in St. Cloud where she worked 10+ years. Dorine worked as a legal secretary and retired from Lindquist and Vennum Law Firm. She enjoyed doing crafts, bowling and spending time with family and friends. She was a member of St. Boniface Parish.
Survivors include her husband, Jim; children, Jerry (Travis) Fladmark, Clay Fladmark, Robert “Bud” (Ruth) Fladmark, Theresa Fladmark-Kulkay, and Steve (Leah) Fladmark; 11 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Ruth Kortuem.
She was preceded in death by her siblings, Bob, Ginny, Red and Norma; her first husband, Erwin Fladmark (1981); grandson, Joseph; and Edward Kruse.
Robert M. Ryan, 78
Cold Spring

Robert Matthias Bob Ryan died Friday December 10, 2010 at the age of 78. He lived in Cold Spring, MN and spent winters in Florida. He was born January 19, 1932 in Litchfield, MN to Matthias and Lucille (Buggy) Ryan. He graduated from high school and entered the US Army where he earned the rank of Staff Sergeant and was a Platoon Sergeant in Korea during the Korean War. He served eight years in the army with four years in Korea and four years in the reserves at Ft. Snelling. Bob was married to Mary Elaine Fennell of Clontarf, MN on June 26, 1954 at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis, MN. They did not have children. He worked as a lather and was a member of the Lathers Union Local 190. He worked his career in construction and was part of the crew that built the IDS tower. He was a member of the American Legion Post 435 of Richfield, MN from the time of his discharge to his death and was proud of his 51 years of continuous membership. He was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Parish and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Bob was preceded in death by Mary, his wife of 50 years; his parents; his brother, Jim Ryan and Jims wife, Patricia (Heutmaker) Ryan; his brother and sisters-in-law, Lyle and Muriel (Fennell) Rosetter, and Mary Fennell.
He is survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Mel and Marlys (Fennell) Klyve of Benson, MN, Ward and JoAnn Fennell of Casa Grande, AZ, and Lowell Fennell of Plymouth, MN; along with many nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Friday, December 17, 2010 at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Richmond, MN with visitation at 10:00 a.m. followed by mass at 11:00. Williams-Dingmann Funeral Home of Sauk Rapids has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Zoey Viola Ecker, age 5 months
North Mankato
July 1, 2010 – December 8, 2010
Zoey Viola Ecker, age 5 months, died in the arms of her parents on Wednesday at Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis. A gathering of family and friends will be from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 11 with a Funeral Service at 12:30 p.m. at the Wenner Funeral Home, Cold Spring. Burial will be in the St. Boniface Parish Cemetery. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at the Cross View Covenant Church in North Mankato.
Zoey was born at Abbott North Western Hospital in Minneapolis, MN to Brian and Tammy (Dodge) Ecker. She was born with heart, liver, intestine, kidney and leg problems. She had a 6 hour heart surgery on July 12 and a 7 hour gastro-intestinal surgery on Aug 5. She had a tough fight for her life and outlived many doctors’ expectations. She was a true fighter with a lot of “spunk”. She went home for the first time on Aug 19 at 7 weeks old. She was in and out of the hospital for infections in September, October, and November. She taught us about the importance of making eye contact and connections with people. She also taught us about the power that goes beyond medicine; the power of our energy field, also known as “healing touch” and it’s an impact on each other. When we emitted positive, healing energy and made eye contact with her, she did lots of smiling and enjoying life day by day, moment by moment. Her heart stopped for the first time on Dec 7, 2010 at home in her mom’s arms. After 20 minutes of CPR, her heart started again, and she was taken by helicopter back to Children's hospital. She spent her last day lying beside her parents looking us in the eyes, speaking to our hearts, and holding our hands and saying goodbye.
Survivors include her loving parents, Brian and Tammy; twin big sisters, Ryla and Rinoa and big brother, Cory; grandparents, Jim and Connie Ecker along with many aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was preceded in Heaven by her brother, Cedric and grandparents, Howard and Darlene Dodge.
Barbara Frank, age 50

Services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 11, 2010 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Cold Spring, MN for Barbara Frank, age 50, who died unexpectedly Tuesday from natural causes.

Barb was born in St. Cloud, MN to Jerome and Evelyn (Vogel) Frank. She was a former employee of the Cold Spring Granite Company. Barb had a way of being loved by everyone she met.
Survivors include her parents; son, Dillon; siblings, Roman “Butch”, Carol Engelman, Mary (Dan) Witzman, Deb (Tom) Harren, Bob (Bunny), Roger (Betty), Karen Hanranhan, and Paul (Heather) and many other relatives and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 10, 2010 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Cold Spring, MN for Leander Wolf, age 86, who died Tuesday at the St. Cloud Veterans Administration Hospital. Burial will be in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may call after 4:00 p.m. Thursday at the Wenner Funeral Home in Cold Spring and from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. Friday morning in the Narthex of St. Boniface Church. Parish Prayers will be at 7:30 p.m. followed by a rosary with the Catholic Aid Association, Knights of Columbus and Bowlus American Legion #642 on Thursday evening at the Wenner Funeral Home, Cold Spring.
Leander was born in Jacobs Prairie, MN to William and Mary (Ludvig) Wolf. He married Grace Ehresman on May 1, 1948 in St. Boniface Church, Cold Spring. The couple farmed together near Bowlus until retiring 1996 when they moved to Cold Spring. He served in the United States Army as a paratrooper during World War II. Leander enjoyed carpentry, cards, riding his scooter, hunting, fishing and RV traveling. His smile was so calming and sincere. He was a member of St. Boniface Parish, Catholic Aid Association, Knights of Columbus and Bowlus American Legion #642.
Survivors include his children, Andrew (Susan) of Florida, Mary Kay Gravett of Texas, Gary (Terri) of Pequot Lakes, Trudy (LeRoy) Wiechmann of Sartell, Betty (John) Kane of Cannon Falls, Byron (Margaret) of Pequot Lakes, Glen (Julie) of Nebraska, Robin (Scott) Bromberek of Hastings; 22 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; siblings, Al (Lois), Ray (Adeline), Roman (Janelle), Edmond (Marguerite), Leon (Carol), Nick, Roger (Judy), John (G’anne); sisters-in-law, Mary, Joanne and Millie; and many nieces and nephews.

Bill was born in Lake George Township on the home farm to Leo and Clara (Virnig) Schoenberg. He married Catherine Thome on June 16, 1951 in Seven Dolors Church, Albany. Bill was a World War II Vet and he enjoyed farming, hunting, golf and sports. He was a member of St. Boniface Parish, and Catholic Aid Association.
Survivors include his loving wife of 59 ½ years, Catherine; children, Jim (Sue) of Edina, Steve (Cindy) of Elrosa, Mary (Rich) Daniels of Chaska, Pat (Peter) Taft of Cold Spring and Bonnie (Mike) Bieringer of Buffalo; 10 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren and 4 step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers. Earl and Bob.

Leander was born in Richmond, MN to George and Mary (Schwope) Peltz. He married Rose Drontle on May 9, 1951 in Richmond, Minnesota. Leander and Rose farmed north of Roscoe until retiring in 1994. In his retirement he loved working at Rotochopper, woodworking, fishing, playing cards and gardening. Spending time with his family brought a smile to Leander’s face and he was not afraid to show them how much he loved them and tell them the joy he got from their time together. He was a member of St. Martin Parish, Catholic Aid Association and St. Joseph’s Society of Roscoe.
Survivors include his children, Dianne (Ronald) Schmitz of Sauk Rapids, Donna Mae (Marty) Stone of Avon, Marilyn (Harvey) Lieser of Lake Henry and Mike (Char) Peltz of Roscoe; daughter-in-law, Barb Peltz of St. Martin; brother, Benedict; sisters, Marcella Dingmann and Laura (Marc) Pierskalla; 12 grandchildren; 5 step-grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren.

Bob Bosma, age 86

Bob Bosma, 86 of Watkins, passed away on November 15, 2010 at his home. Private family services were held at the Ertl Funeral Home in Watkins.
Bob Bosma was born on February 16, 1924 at Sioux City, Iowa. He was the son of Dick and Mabel (Kammalade) Bosma. He married Shirley Netland on September 15, 1943 in Willmar. Bob was employed as a machinist at the Grain Belt Brewery in Minneapolis for 25 years, retiring in 1981. He was a member of the Watkins and Eden Valley Sportsmen’s Clubs and he was an honorary member of the Watkins Fire Department. His hobbies included fishing and woodworking and visiting with the local people. He was proud of his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Bob is survived by his wife Shirley of Watkins; children and their spouses, Gary Bosma of Kelseyville, CA, Sharon and Jim Ruhwedel of Watkins, Barbara and Mike Davis of Portland, OR; 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Clara M. Stein, age 95 of Kimball died Tuesday, November 16, 2010 at the Assumption Nursing Home in Cold Spring.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 19, 2010 at St. Anne Catholic Church, Kimball. Fr. Gerald Mischke will Celebrate the Mass and burial will be in St. Annes Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-7:30 p.m. Thursday at Dingmann Funeral Care Chapel, Kimball and one hour prior to the service, Friday at the church. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. and a rosary at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, both at the funeral home.
Clara Marie Stein was born July 12, 1915 in Rockville to Frank and Aggatha (Molitor) Bauer. She married Anton N. Stein on November 5, 1935 in Rockville and he preceded her in death on May 19, 1995. Clara farmed with her husband and later worked as a home health aide. She was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church in Kimball, Christian Mothers and of the Litchfield Senior Citizens Club. Clara enjoyed sewing, crocheting, baking, music, dancing and being with her three children, 19 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Anton; daughter, Darlene Dodge; grandchildren, Joshua Hilsgen and Susan Decker; great grandchildren, Jonathan Decker and Cedric Ecker; sons-in-law, Marvin Hilsgen and Howard Dodge; sisters, Ida Schreiner and Alma Lovejoy; and brothers, Leo, Mike and Albert Bauer.

Art was born in Cold Spring, MN to Ben and Mayme (Blume) Goebel. He married Rose Elizabeth Schaefer on November 5, 1955 in Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Richmond. Art worked at Cold Spring Granite for 42 years as a fork lift operator. He loved to fish, do woodworking-among other things- in his shop, cut grass with his riding lawnmower and playing aggravation with his grandchildren. Art and his grandchildren were always ready to do whatever grandpa wanted, whether it was to go to the pumpkin patch, frost Christmas cookies, or coloring Easter eggs! His face would light up when his grandchildren entered the room. Art was a member of St. Boniface Parish.

Roman was born in Cold Spring, MN to Peter and Elizabeth (Schmitt) Minnerath. He married Frances Bellmont on May 8, 1952 in Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church, Rockville. He served in the United States Army from April 24, 1942 – January 15, 1946. Roman was a farmer and he enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards, and spending time with his family. He was a member of St. Benedict Parish, Catholic Aid Association and Cold Spring American Legion and VFW.

Richard was born in Little Falls, MN to Joseph and Gertrude (Benkowski) Symanietz. He married Elizabeth Birchem on August 28, 1965 in St. John the Baptist, Swanville, MN. Richard served in the United States Army from 1962 – 1970 in the Reserves. In 1973 he became self-employed as a mechanic. His hobbies were summer and winter fishing, hunting, and woodworking. She liked quilting, gardening, playing cards, flowers, embroidery, crocheting, bingo, spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of St. Boniface Parish, Christian Women and St. Julian’s Mission Group.

Visitation will be Tuesday morning from 9:30 – 10:45 a.m. with a rosary being said at 10:30 a.m. in the St. Nicholas Church prior to mass. Arrangements entrusted with the Wenner Funeral Home, Cold Spring.
Hildegard was born in St. Nicholas, MN to Michael and Margaret (Dockendorf) Wolters. She attended St. Ben’s High School and moved to St. Paul where she worked at the Secretary of State’s Office. Hildegard later returned to the family farm and lived there until the mid 1990’s when she moved off the Wolters Family Century Farm to a home outside of Cold Spring.
Hildy was a very kind and compassionate woman who had a particular fondness for animals – especially dogs. She was a very talented gardener. Hildy and her twin sister, Anastasia, grew beautiful flowers and for many years they provided flowers for St. Nicholas Church. She also loved to can garden produce, sew and bake delicious bread. She was a member of St. Nicholas Parish and Christian Women.
Survivors include her brother, Ben (Joyce); sister-in-law, Lorraine and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Leo, Raymond, Andrew, Roman and her twin sister, Anastasia.

Phyllis enjoyed playing the piano and organ in various churches and was an avid sports fan. She loved to laugh and play cards and will always be remembered as a cheerful person. She was a member of St. Boniface Parish.

Susan Theisen Neu, age 101

Susan Neu age 101, of Cold Spring passed away peacefully on October 21, 2010, 5 days before her 102nd birthday. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 29, 2010 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Cold Spring, MN with visitation beginning at 9:00 a.m. in the Church Narthex.
Sue was born on the family farm outside of Eden Valley on October 26, 1908 to Math and Kathrine Schutz. She met her first husband, Paul Theisen, at a barn dance at the Schutz farm. Sue married Paul on July 10, 1928. They bought and operated the Cold Spring Elevator. Sue and Paul were married for 39 years until Paul’s death in 1967. Sue and Paul raised two sons, Cyril and Edwin. Sue married Alphonse Neu in 1978. They were happily married until Al died in 2003.
She was preceded in death by her siblings, Christ Schutz, Rose Theisen, Math Schutz, George Schutz, Agnes Knaus, Theresa Vogt, John Schutz, Andrew Schutz, and Robert Schutz; husbands, Paul and Al; sons, Cyril and Edwin; daughter-in-law, Kathleen (Hennen), and stepson, Tom Neu.
Sue is survived by her siblings, Anne Brummer, Marie Ruhland, and Nicky (Regina) Schutz; stepson, Ron (Barb) Neu, stepdaughter-in-law, Mary Lee Neu; grandchildren, Keith (Barbara) Dean (Beth), Darla, Lisa (Peter), Scott (Chantelle), Paul (Jolynn); step grandchildren, Stacie, Theresa, Kyle (Jennifer), and Lyle; ten great-grandchildren, two step great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Sue loved to garden, cook and play cards. She had a wonderful sense of humor and will be missed by many.

Elizabeth “Beth” Bonham, died Monday at the St. Cloud Hospital. There will be a visitation from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Friday at the Wenner Funeral Home in Cold Spring. Memorial Service will be at a later date.
Beth was born in Bertha, MN to James and Marianne Potratz. She graduated from Cloquet High School in 1972. Beth married Dale Bonham on August 6, 1976 in Cloquet. The young couple lived in Minneapolis while attending the University of Minnesota and Beth graduated in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Therapy. She worked for several Health Care Institutions in Minneapolis and St. Cloud, bringing caring competence to her profession.
They were blessed with a son born in 1983, and when he was a toddler, the family moved to Cold Spring, where they have made their home for the past 25 years. Beth loved to cook for her family and friends, delighted in tending her flower gardens, and enjoyed music and attending concerts, scrapbooking, traveling and entertaining. She also loved taking brisk walks with her dogs and she appreciated the little details of nature. Above all, she dearly loved her family, and her gentle, thoughtful, and caring ways will be forever treasured by those she left behind. Beth was a member of American Physical Therapist Association and the American Brittany Rescue.
Survivors include her loving husband, Dale; son, Matthew of Sartell; parents, James and Marianne Potratz of Park Rapids; sisters, Rebecca (Nicholas) Kemp of Buffalo, Julie (Scott) Hokeness of Lakeville; nieces and nephews, Lexi, Sam, Harry, and Joe; special friend, Sara Patton; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Leo had a passion for music and was a talented singer/song writer/ instrumentalist. He brought joy to many people through his music. He was a member of St. Catherine’s Parish, Catholic Aid Association, and at the U of M he was involved in Innovative Engineers. His dream in life was to help promote sustainable communities in developing countries. Leo also enjoyed spending time with his family, snowmobiling, vacationing, fishing, camping, the outdoors, and foreign travel to Israel, Japan, and Jordan.

Ken was born March 17, 1948 in St. Cloud to Gilbert & Erica (DeMorrett) Dockendorf. He married Susan Sue Welle on June 15, 1974 at St. Josephs Catholic Church in Waite Park. Ken lived in the Waite Park area all his life and was owner/operator of Mechanical Systems Insulation for 30 years. He was an active member of St. Josephs Catholic Church, The Last Mans Club, Cold Spring American Legion Post 455 and Waite Park American Legion Post 428. He was also a member of St. Cloud State University Basketball and Football Booster Clubs and the Waite Park Park Board. Ken loved all sports.

Beatrice was born in Hawick, MN to Martin and Margarethe Monson. She graduated from Paynesville High School in 1940. Beatrice married Norman Schwandt on April 23, 1942. She lived in Paynesville all her married life. Eleven children were born to this union. Beatrice was a homemaker who loved to garden, cook and bake while raising her 11 children. She also did in-home day care for many years. She was a member of River of Life Assembly of God Church, Cold Spring.

Robley was born in Corcoran, MN to Robley and Mary (Barry) Evans. He married Rita Flaherty on December 29, 1956 in St. Mary’s Church, LeCenter, MN. Robley was a devoted husband who loved his family, and spending time with his grandchildren brought him great happiness. Robley graduated from LeCenter High School in 1948 and St. John’s University in 1952 where he was captain of the football team, and received his Master’s in Education from the University of Minnesota. He served in the United States Army from 1952 – 1954. He taught at Lester Prairie for 2 years, and then was teacher, coach, and administrator at St. John’s Prep for 35 years. Robley enjoyed bridge, tennis, golf, and dancing. Robley was a member of the Albany City Council for 12 years and mayor for 8 years, St. Joseph Society of Catholic Aid, past commander and lifetime member of the Albany Legion Post #482, past president of Minnesota Catholic Education Association, and a 45 year member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church.

Carl was born in Cold Spring, MN to Charles and Theresia (Hansen) Hesse. He served in the United States Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theater. He worked at the Cold Spring Granite Company until his retirement in 1983. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and golfing. Carl was a talented woodcrafter. He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Catholic Order of Foresters and the Cold Spring VFW #6915.
Survivors include his siblings, LaVerne Erpelding, Herbert (Lorraine) Hesse, Delpine Peters, Fran Zelenak and many nieces and nephews.

Stephen was born in Olympia, WA to Herman and Kathryn (Prine) Reinhardt. He married Ruth Linz on October 26, 1976 in Cold Spring. Stephen loved his family and his grandchildren could bring a smile to his face in an instant. He worked many years at Plantenberg’s Processing Plant and more recently at SJ Lewis. Stephen enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing. He was a member of St. Boniface Parish.

John farmed in the Albany area and later worked at Gold’n Plump until retirement. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards and spending time with family and friends. He was a member of St. Boniface Parish, Knights of Columbus and St. Joseph’s Catholic Aid Society.

Judy Pauls, 48 of Watkins, died Saturday, September 25, 2010 at her home following a courageous battle with cancer. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at 10:30 am at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Watkins with interment in the St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery. Rev. Richard Gross officiated. Music was by Kathy Pauls. Casket bearers were Zach Schmitz, Nathan Pauls, Corey Pauls, Chris Loch, Mike Loch and Justin Schneider. Honorary Casket Bearers were Brenda Carlson, Ellen Berg, Michelle Terwey, Nora Rohrbeck, Nickie Hennen, Katie Lemke, Vickie Schneider and Shirley Loch. Arrangements were by the Ertl Funeral Home, Watkins.
Judy was born on January 13, 1962 in Paynesville to Alvin and Bernice (Caspers) Wachmann. She was united in marriage to Glenn Pauls on Aug. 11, 1984 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Richmond. She had been employed at the Assumption Nursing Home in Cold Spring, the V.A. Medical Center in St. Cloud and she worked for 18 years in Customer Service at Fingerhut Corp. About seven years ago, Judy purchased Buds Bar in Watkins which she operated to the present time. Judy was a member of the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Watkins. She was also a
member of the Watkins Lioness Club and was Co Chair of the Watkins Kraut and Wurst Parade Committee. She was a proud sponsor of Iraqi Freedom. She enjoyed flowers, yard work and spending time with family and friends. Judy especially enjoyed her pet dogs.

John liked to snowmobile and four wheel, fix radios, televisions, tractors and computers. Family and friends will remember the smile he had on his face and brought to the face of others. He was a member of Catholic Order of Foresters and the Knights of Columbus.

He married Dolores Hislop on June 25, 1999 in Paynesville. She died in 2003. Dan farmed, worked for Cold Spring Granite and retired as a welder from Louis Industries. In his retirement he enjoyed driving bus for Richmond Bus Service. Dan liked to dance, fish, garden, play cards, bake cookies and mostly spend time with his family. He was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Parish, Catholic Aid Association, Richmond Knights of Columbus (past Grand Knight), and Father Pierz Assembly of St. Cloud Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus.

Christopher was born August 4, 1982 to Willard and Donna (Hageman) Sabrowsky in Albany, MN. He lived and farmed in the Albany area his entire life. He worked at St. Johns University and most recently at the College of St. Benedicts in St. Joseph in the maintenance department. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Farming Township, MN. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, farming, playing video games, driving 3 wheeler and operating large tractors. He was always more than willing to help out with anything. He will be missed dearly by all who knew him.

Ted was born in Quincy, MA to Carl T. and Kerstin (Armfelt) Norlin. He married Betty Johnson in 1942 and she died March 8, 1994. He then married Eunice Grausam in 1995. Ted served in the United States Air Force during World War II. He was the Chief Estimator for building projects at the Cold Spring Granite Company until his retirement in 1988 and was an avid golfer. Ted was a member of the Cold Spring American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Eunice; brother, Ken Norlin; children, Dan (Patti), Steve (Diane), Becky Schlangen and Kris Canfield; 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Rosemary Shaw, age 97

Rosemary was born in Indianapolis, Indiana to Raymond and Frieda (Mall) Lee. She married Clarence Shaw in 1934 in California. Rosemary lived the majority of her first 80 years in California, and in 1989 she moved to Cold Spring to be closer to her family. She lived her last 5 years at St. Benedict’s Senior Community of St. Cloud where she died peacefully on Tuesday morning. Arrangements were entrusted with the Wenner Funeral Home, Cold Spring.
Survivors include her daughter, Marilyn Creed (Al Lambrecht) of Cold Spring; granddaughter, Amanda Creed-Schnack of Brooklyn Park and grandson, Evan Creed of Verona, WI; great-grandson, Liam Creed.

Rev. Maurice Landwehr was born in Rockville to John and Ida (Fietsam) Landwehr. He was ordained by Bishop Bartholome on June 7, 1958 at St. Mary’s Cathedral in St. Cloud. He then served in many parishes throughout the St. Cloud Diocese: including, St. Mary’s in Breckenridge, St. Mary’s Cathedral in St. Cloud, St. Mary’s in Melrose, St. Donatus in Brooten, St. Bernard’s in Ward Springs and Immaculate Conception in Sedan.
He moved to Rockville in 1972 and together with his parishioners built the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. He loved the members of his parish, canoeing and his pets Angelo and Kautz.
Survivors include his siblings Roger Landwehr and Eunice Weber.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Francis and Ione.

She worked at the St. Cloud Reformatory for more than 25 years. Gail loved working on her amazing flower gardens and creating beautiful crafts. She also enjoyed going antique shopping and being in the outdoors. Gail adored being with her beautiful granddaughter.
She was a member of the Country Snow Cruisers Snowmobile Club.

Herb was a member of St. Boniface Parish, Catholic Order of Foresters and the Cold Spring #455 American Legion.

Elsie was born November 23, 1921 in Cold Spring to Peter and Mary (Dombroski) Tholl. She married George Binsfeld on October 21, 1943 in St. Nicholas. Elsie enjoyed spending many hours in her garden, doing yard work, and going to the casino. She was a member of the St. Nicholas Catholic Church.
Elsie is survived by her children; Pat (Gary) Krantz, Tenstrike; Marilyn (Tom Ruprecht) Binsfeld, St. Nicholas; Linda (Tony) Cherne, Albany; and Jerry (Jan Stransky) Binsfeld, Cold Spring. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Keith Krantz, Tanya Thielen, Tammy Lieser, Nicholas Binsfeld, Michelle Jonas, four great-grandchildren and her sisters and brother; Rita Binsfeld, Cold Spring; James (Joanie) Tholl, Rice; and Hilda Steil, Richmond.
Elsie is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, George on December 9, 1999 and her brothers, Leander Tholl and Victor Tholl.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Central Minnesota Heart Center at the St. Cloud Hospital.
Cora (Clara Cordelia) Becker, 98

Cora Becker, age 98, died peacefully with her family by her side on August 19, 2010.
Cora was born in Richmond, MN on June 18, 1912 to Herman & Anna (Kemper) Torborg. She married Leo N. Becker on May 17, 1947 in Richmond. Leo & Cora owned and operated Becker Shoe Repair in Richmond. They retired to Longville, MN, in 1976 where they spent 20 wonderful years before moving back to Richmond in 1997.
Cora will be remembered for her absolute love of the Minnesota Twins, her beautiful embroidery, her remarkable memory and playing the organ.
She is survived by her son, Ted (Ione) of Cold Spring; her grandson Dan (Julia) and great-grandson, Caleb of Minneapolis; her grandson Nathan of Richfield; and her sister, Dorothy Brisse of Cold Spring.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo; infant daughter, Mary; 11 siblings; and her parents.
Visitation will be held at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Richmond on August 30th, 2010 starting at 9:00 am with the mass following at 11:00 am. Funeral arrangements were made by Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN.
Leroy H. Frank, age 51
Wasilla, Alaska

Leroy H. Frank recently passed away while doing what he loved to do during Alaskan summers, riding his motorcycle.
Leroy graduated from Rocori High School in 1977. He then enlisted in the Army and commissioned to Special Forces. Traveled the world extensively and honorably discharged in 1983. He then relocated to Alaska and went to work for Underwater Construction. In 1992 Leroy started working for Norgasco Alaska, which had been his current employer. Leroy always had a positive attitude and gave everything 110%. He enjoyed family, life, travel, fishing, and most of all, Nancy Lake. He will be greatly missed by family, friends, and co-workers.
He is survived by sons Ben and Beau at home at Nancy Lake, Alaska. Parents Jerome and Evelyn Frank currently reside in Cold Spring, Minnesota. Siblings (in chronological order) Roman (Butch) Frank, Wasilla, AK.; Carol Engelman, Coon Rapids, MN; Mary and Dan Witzman, Bowlus, MN; Bob and Bunny Frank, St. Cloud, MN; Roger and Betty Frank, Chugiak, AK; Barbara Frank, St. Cloud, MN; Karen Hanrahan, Anchorage, AK; and Paul and Heather Frank, St. Michael, MN. He also has numerous nieces and nephews that love and miss him very much.
Mass will be said in Cold Spring, Minnesota at a later date. Donations can be made at any Northrim Bank in Alaska in his name. A celebration of Leroy’s life will be held on Wednesday, August 26th from 5:30PM to 7:30PM at VFW Post 9365 located at 301 East Lakeview Avenue in Wasilla, Alaska.

David Peter Honer, age 68

Mass and Celebration of life of David P. Honer, age 68, of Punta Gorda, FL will be at St. John’s Abbey Church, 31802 County Rd. 159, Collegeville, MN 56321 (near St. Cloud) on Saturday, Aug. 14 with visitation from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. and mass beginning at 2:30 p.m., burial following, and meal with toast/roast of David’s life following, so come prepared with stories! David died peacefully at the Tidewell Hospice House in Port Charlotte, FL on July 24 after a sudden brain tumor diagnosis on May 5, 2010. David was born in St. Cloud, MN to Norb and Angie (Wolkerstorfer) Honer. He married Martha Otto Honer on September 12, 1969, they divorced in 1989, and made amends via a heartfelt phone call on June 12th. David attended St. Boniface High School where he enjoyed football, basketball, shot put, and discus and was voted in King his Senior Year.
David obtained a BA in Econ-Business/ROTC at St. John’s University. He also was a right guard of the championship football team, the St. John’s Johnnies! After four years of ROTC at St. John’s, he joined the army as a paratrooper for the 82nd Airborne Division for two years. He received his CPA license and started with Coopers & Lybrand, then CFO for Naegele Outdoor Advertising, and spent the remainder of his career as CFO with Bob Naegele, Jr. of Naegele Communications where he was also on the Board of Directors for the Rollerblade, Inc.
David loved nature all his life and felt close to God in all of God’s creations, spending many happy childhood days in Cold Spring, MN at the river fishing. He carried that love of fishing into retirement at age 50 to become an avid “catch and release”, fresh & saltwater fisherman and especially loved fly fishing for trout in mountain streams and made a hobby out of tying his own beautiful flies. He also enjoyed surprising people, traveling all over the world, remodeling/landscaping his home, and enjoyed playing all types of card games, especially poker (a Honer tradition). One of his greatest adventures came June 2nd when during a phone call with Bob and Ellis Naegele, he invited Jesus into his heart and felt a peace and tranquility he had never experienced before, and began to share this passionately with everyone he met!
Survivors include his sister, Karen Honer Paron; nieces/nephews, Amanda Paron, Johanna (Daniel) Paron Picard, Denise (Jim) Honer Rinne, Wanda Marie (Buddy) Honer Gau; great nieces/nephews; former wife, Martha Otto Honer; former sister-in-law, Geri Schriefels Honer Novotny; lifetime family friends, the entire Muggli family-especially classmate, Louise; many other friends and relatives.

When she and Nick retired from farming she worked at Vogt Food Market. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, canning, quilting, visiting with others and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of St. Boniface Parish and Christian Women.

Brian Z Walz, 41, of Watkins, passed away on Thursday, July 15, 2010 at his parents home surrounded by family and friends following a courageous battle with cancer. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at 10:30 am at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Watkins. Interment was in the St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery. Rev. John Brunner and Rev. Tony Hesse concelebrated. Music was by Mary Streit and the church choir. Casket bearers were Trista Walz, Brandon Walz, Mary Knisley, Mark Walz, Bruce Walz, Nancy Mackereth, Larry Brulla, Mike Donnay and Bob Holthaus. Honorary casket bearers were members of the Watkins Fire Department. Arrangements were by the Ertl Funeral Home, Watkins.
Brian Z Walz was born on May 17, 1969 at Paynesville. He was the son of Maynard and Jeanette (Derichs) Walz. On August 24, 1991, Brian was united in marriage to Ann Brulla at the Assumption Church in Eden Valley. Brian was a building contractor working primarily as an iron worker and carpenter. He also farmed north of Watkins. Brian was a member of the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Watkins and was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters. He was also a member of the Watkins Fire Department and the Watkins Sportsmens Club. Brian enjoyed fishing and hunting and spending time at the hunting land up north. His hobbies included gardening, four wheeling, playing bean bag toss and car racing. He especially enjoyed baseball and watching the various high school sports that his children were involved in.

Joseph N. Krippner, 87 of Kimball, passed away on Thursday, July 15, 2010 at the VA Medical Center in St. Cloud. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, July 19, 2010 at 11:00 am at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Marty with interment in the Holy Cross Cemetery. Con-Celebrants were Rev. Jerry Nordick, Rev. Tom Olson, Rev. Dick McGuire, Rev. Al Stangl and Rev. Tony Oelrich. Organist was James Keane and Cantors were Rachel Krippner and Helen Krippner. Cross Bearer was Nate Schindler. Casket bearers were Joe Krippner, Jake Flandung, Ted Fernholz, Dan Adams, Mickie Krippner and Kevin Kuechle. Arrangements were by the Ertl Funeral Home, Watkins.
Joseph Krippner was born on July 31, 1922 to Mathias and Hildegard (Krier) Krippner at Main Prairie Township, Stearns County, Minnesota. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943 to 1946. On June 25, 1946, Joseph was united in marriage to Isabella Rossmann at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in St. Nicholas. They farmed in Main Prairie Township until retiring in 1982. Joseph was a lifetime member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and searved as a Parish Trustee and with the Mens Society. Joseph was a member of the Wat-Kim-Valley VFW Post 5460 and served as Commander in 1986 -87. He was also a 65 year member of the American Legion Post 453 in Watkins. He was a volunteer at the St. Cloud VA Medical Center for 23 years. Joseph also served on the Kimball School Board and the Main Prairie Township Board. He enjoyed baseball and playing cards.

Joe (also known as J.J.) was born in Richmond, MN to Herman and Lucy (Schulte) Willenbring. He married Renee Oster on June 16, 1947 in St. Boniface Church, Cold Spring. Joe graduated from Eden Valley High School in 1936. He attended St. John’s University from 1939 to 1942, graduating in three years in order to enlist in the United States Navy as our country went to war. Joe attended midshipman school at Notre dame. He then served his country during World War II in the Mariana Islands in the Pacific from 1942 to 1945. Joe was a Navy Lieutenant Junior Grade advancing to Senior Grade. Over the years he kept in touch with several of his shipmates.
Upon returning from the war, Joe attended St. Paul College of Law (now known as William Mitchell) and graduated in 1950. He was admitted to the Bar in January 1951. Joe’s first job was with the St. Paul Fire & Marine Insurance Company in Fargo, ND as a claim adjuster. In 1955 Joe and Renee returned to Central Minnesota. Joe practiced law in Cold Spring for 31 years (1955 – 1985) first with partner Francis Russell. Later, the law firm became known as Willenbring, Lickteig, and Dahl; and finally, Willenbring, Dahl, Wocken, and Zimmerman.
Joe and Renee celebrated 63 years together and raised four children. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and counselor/mentor to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He loved life and felt blessed and thankful for his family and the many wonderful experiences he enjoyed throughout his lifetime. Joe and Renee were long time members of a couples’ bridge club, and of the ‘Ball and Chain Club’. They also enjoyed bowling. Joe was a founding member of Rich Spring Golf Club and later belonged to the River Oaks Golf Course. He sang with the Cold Spring Area Maennerchor for many years. Joe was a huge proponent of education, he loved music, and he was an avid sports fan. His favorite past time was attending baseball, basketball, and football games at St. John’s University and ROCORI High School. Family, friends and neighbors alike frequently received Joe’s famous banana bread that he baked during his retirement years.
Joe is the past president of the following organizations; Cold Spring Chamber of Commerce, Cold Spring Lion’s Club, Central MN St. John’s University Alumni Association and Stearns-Benton Bar Association. Joe was the first Grand Knight of Columbus in Cold Spring. He was the First Chairman of the Board of Education for ROCORI High School (From inception through the building of the high school). Joe (along with other leaders in the community) was instrumental as well as the driving force behind the formation of the ROCORI School District. Joe was a member St. James Parish in Jacobs Prairie and St. Boniface Parish, Cold Spring American Legion and Cold Spring VFW.
Joe is survived by his loving wife, Renee; children, Bede (Vonnie) of New Hope, Catherine (Brian) Schmucker of Cold Spring, Michael (Joan) of Jacobs Prairie, Thomas of St. Cloud. Grandpa Joe will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Andrew (Rebecca), Joseph (Jessi) and Rosemary, Aaron (Betsy), Nicole (Dallas) Apold, Kathryn and Amy Schmucker; James (Janet), Robert (Amanda), Noah (Kari), John, Thomas, and Baylee; great-grandchildren, Megan, Chelsea, Soren, Hanna, Adam, James, Abigail; sister, Amelia Bibeau of Cold Spring; many nieces and nephews.

John was born in Cold Spring, MN to Joseph and Emeline (Kray) Peters. He married Delphine Katherine Hesse on October 18, 1952 in St. Boniface Church, Cold Spring. John was a life long resident of Cold Spring. He was a military veteran, serving two separate enlistments in the United States Navy between 1944 -1950. He enjoyed a successful 25 year career with North Western Bell Telephone Company as a telephone repair specialist for the Central Minnesota area. His life long passion was his dedication to his family. John’s greatest joy was being with his family in the activities of hunting, fishing, camping, boating, and just being together. He was a member of Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church and The Disabled American Veterans.

Ray farmed and owned a plumbing and heating business near St. Nicholas before retiring to Richmond in 1992. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, gardening, and playing cards. He was active in Koinonia, Church Choir, Catholic Aid, Knights of Columbus, Senior Citizens, and numerous volunteer ministries.

Rita was born in Eden Valley, MN to Peter and Agatha (Vetsch) Nistler. She married Marcellus J. Theis on October 31, 1946 in St. Augustine’s Church, St. Cloud. Rita worked as a clerk at Dan Marsh Drug and the Cold Spring Post Office. She retired in 1955 when they adopted their first child. Rita loved spending time with her family, playing cards, gardening, embroidering, cross word puzzles, and bird watching. She was a member of St. Boniface Parish, Christian Women, Cold Spring American Legion Auxiliary, Senior Citizen’s group and she volunteered at St. Boniface School.
Survivors include her loving husband of 63 years, Marcellus “Sal”; sons, Robert “Spitz” Spaeth (foster son), Mike (Danelle) Theis; daughter, Jean (Doug) Hanson; 11 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren.

Sharon loved being a wife, mother and grandmother. It was as a grandmother that Sharon found her greatest purpose and deepest fulfillment. Her close friends appreciated and instantly recognized her contagious and easy laughter. Among her favorite pastimes was the simple joy of a winning bridge hand. She was a member of St. Boniface Parish, Christian Women, Red Hats and various bridge groups.

Clint was born December 12, 1931 in Kimball to Simon E. & Adella (Brinkman) Cossairt. He married Audrey DeYaeger on September 23, 1950 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in St. Cloud. He worked at Coke Bottling Company and later as a machinist at St. Regis-Champion Paper Mill in Sartell for 43 years. Clint served as president of the union for many years. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sauk Rapids. He is a retired member of the Sartell-LeSauk Fire Department. Clint enjoyed spending time outdoors, golfing and fishing. Clint was an all star basketball & football player, bowler, and softball player. He holds a record in scoring at his alma mater, Sauk Rapids High School.

Wally was born in Cold Spring, MN to Walter James and Martha (Kloeppner) Conrad. He attended St. John’s Prep and graduated from St. Boniface High School, Cold Spring, MN, where he met his lifelong sweetheart and bride Irene Schwinghamer. They were married on December 9, 1944 in St. Boniface Church, Cold Spring. Wally’s career began as a draftsman and he spent many of his 45 years at Cold Spring Granite Co. in Sales. He and Irene enjoyed flea markets and meeting people through C+C (Conrad + Christ) Collectables. Wally served in the US Navy as an Aviation Radioman on PBY’s. He was a life member of the VFW, KC’s and Cold Spring Sportsman’s Club and lifetime member of “Glory of God” prayer group, Marriage Encounter, Oblate of St. Benedict’s/St. John’s Abby; he was also a friend of Bill W.
Wally and Jerry Kollmann, backed by John Alexander, were instrumental in forming what is now known as ROCORI School District #750, and he was Superintendent of School District #2039 at Grand Lake, Rockville, MN.
Wally’s past-times included: Scripture study, gardening, fishing, hunting, golfing, following sports, and playing cards. Wally and Irene also enjoyed many winters in Mesa, AZ, and he gave ‘Praise to the Lord’ that he was able to raise his “tribe” on Grand Lake.

Vern was born in Melrose, MN to Frank and Angeline (Machtmes) Humbert. After high school at Crosier and in Melrose, Vern served in the Navy and went on to graduate from St. Cloud State University and the University of Minnesota in Education. He married Phyllis Athmann on September 10, 1949 in St. Mary’s Cathedral in St. Cloud. The couple had seven children and lived in the Twin Cities area where Vern was employed by the Bloomington Schools as a teacher and administrator. They moved to Cold Spring in 1989. Vern loved the outdoors, especially lawn and garden work, fishing, and traveling. He enjoyed music and was a member of the Cold Spring Area Meaennerchor, the St. Boniface Resurrection Choir and he was a lector at church. Vern was a member of St. Boniface Parish, Knights of Columbus, Catholic Aid Association, Cold Spring American Legion, Crosier Apostolate, Rocori Senior Center and several education organizations.

David enjoyed movies, carpentry, working on cars, classical music, singing and watching TV-especially science fiction and history. He was a member of St. Boniface Parish, past member of the Parish Council and he served on many of the parish’s committees.

Pat loved and cherished her family and took pride in being a loving wife and mother. She graduated from the St. Cloud Beauty College and worked as a hairstylist before starting her family. Pat was the secretary for the Richmond Bus Service until 1986, and enjoyed hunting, shopping, and crafts. Pat volunteered with Meals on Wheels (25 years) and the Jacob Wetterling Foundation.

She took pride in being a faithful and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to us all. Jean enjoyed crocheting, embroidery, cards, bingo, fishing, quilting, watching the Twins and she volunteered over 2300 hours at the Nursing Home over the years. She had a knack for visiting, even to those she didn’t know well; everyone has a story and she was eager to listen. Jean was a member of St. Boniface Parish, Catholic Order of Foresters, Catholic Aid Association, St. Julian’s Mission Group, and Christian Women.

Alcuin was born in St. Nicholas, MN to Adam and Mary (Stein) Kraemer. He married Angela Steil on August 31, 1949 in St. Boniface Church, Cold Spring. Alcuin served in the United States Army. He was a mechanic; he owned and operated, Automotive Machine Shop Service. Alcuin enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards, dancing and spending time with his family. He always had a smile on his face, ready to shake your hand and say hello. He was a member of Holy Cross Parish, Men’s Society and Waite Park American Legion Post #428.

Art was born in Jacobs Prairie, MN to Norbert and Delores (Hommerding) Mueller. He farmed on the family farm in Jacobs Prairie all his life. Art loved the land and was an avid Minnesota Twins fan. He enjoyed; gator rides, fishing, playing cards, bowling, and spending time with his nieces and nephews. Art was a member of St. James Parish, Catholic Aid Association, St. James Men’s Society and Cold Spring American Legion.
Survivors include his mother, Delores of Cold Spring, sister, Diane (Denny) Kron of Cold Spring; brother, Denny (Lori) Mueller of Pillager; nieces and nephews, Dean (Stacy) Kron, Dan (Melissa) Kron, Deb (Jason) Gruber, Dede Kron (Shawn Pundsack), Chad Mueller, and Melissa (Mark) Gaalswyk; 7 great-nieces and nephews.

Jonathon was born in St. Cloud, MN to Curt and Kathy (Holtz) Robbins. When we think of Jonathon, we think of the loving son, brother, grandson, cousin, godfather and friend that he was. Jonathon had one of those smiles; if he smiled at you, you couldn’t help but smile back. Jonathon was ‘his Mothers sunshine’! He enjoyed art and was a member of St. Boniface Parish.

Henry “Hank” Sha, age 94

Celebration of life will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 30, 2010 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Cold Spring, MN for Henry “Hank” Sha, age 94, who died Sunday at the St. Cloud VA Hospital. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Little Falls, MN.
A gathering of relatives and friends will be from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church on Friday. Arrangements were entrusted with the Wenner Funeral Home, Cold Spring.
Hank was born in Fergus Falls, MN to Alexander and Wilemina (Kuhlmann) Sha. He married Joyce Hysjulien on August 5, 1945 in Fergus Falls, MN. Hank served as a Paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division during WWII. He was a POW, captured in Sicily, Italy and was taken to Stalag 2B and later transferred to Stalag 10B. Hank was a laborer and considered to be a “jack of all trades”. Hobbies include woodworking, playing cards, bowling and telling stories. Hank also volunteered at the St. Cloud VA Medical Center for 22 years. He was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, lifetime member of the VFW, Disabled American Veterans and American Ex-Prisoners of War.
Survivors include his loving wife of nearly 65 years, Joyce; daughters, Sharon (Steve) Jensen of Circle Pines, Teri (David) Reed of Port Orchard, WA, Kristi Sha of Richmond, Pauline (Bob) Wilson of Missoula, MT, and Julie (Shaun) of St. Charles, MO; 9 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great granddaughter; sisters, Esther Brown and Patricia Stock both of Fergus Falls.

The Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Bernice M Czech, age 78, of Holdingford will be Thursday, April 29, 2010 at 11:00AM at St Hedwigs Catholic Church in Holdingford. Fr Gregory Ombak will officiate and burial will take place in the parish cemetery following the service. Friends may call from 5-9pm on Wednesday April 28 and again prior to the service from 9:30-11am on Thursday. St Hedwigs Altar Rosary and Christian Mothers will pray at 6:15 and parish prayers will be at 7 at the church on Wednesday. Bernice peacefully died Sunday in her home surrounded by her family and puppies. Arrangements are being made with the Miller- Carlin Brenny Funeral Home in Holdingford.
Bernice was born on September 22, 1931 in Freeport to Elizabeth (Denk) and Arthur Wiswell. She married Nick Czech on June 3, 1952 in St Francis. After marriage Bernice moved to the farm where she was a loving mother and home-maker for many years.
Bernice is survived by her children Michael (Carolyn) Czech, Kaysville, UT; Laurette (Laurie) Quistorff, Sauk Centre; Kathy Czech, Holdingford; Jackie (Jeffrey) Middendorf, Grey Eagle; Guy Czech, Holdingford; Terry (Judy) Czech, Cold Spring; Becky Czech, Sauk Centre; Hydie Czech, Holdingford. She is also survived by her grandchildren Randy and Nicole Quistorff, Michael and Lisa Czech, Travis and Trevor Middendorf and one great-grandson Skyler Czech. Bernice was preceded by her husband Nick on February 27, 2001. She was also preceded by her brothers and sister Margaret Notch, Albert Wiswell, and Arnold Wiswell, and son-in-law Wayne Quistorff.

Eugene Schwegel, 93, of Watkins, formerly of Collegeville, and St. Joseph, died Thursday, April 23, 2010 at the Assumption Home in Cold Spring. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday at 10:30 am at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Watkins. Fr. John Brunner officiated. Music was by Mary Streit and the church choir. Interment was at St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery. Casket bearers were grandchildren. Arrangements were by the Ertl Funeral Home, Watkins.
Eugene Schwegel was born to Joseph and Mary (Meyer) Schwegel on December 13, 1916 in Collegeville. He married Olivia Ressemann on June 7, 1938 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Collegeville. They farmed at St. Joseph for many years and also worked at the St. Joseph Meat Market and the saw mill. They moved to Casselton, ND where Eugene worked for a farm corporation for about 13 years prior to moving to Watkins. He also operated a threshing machine and corn shredding service. Eugene was a member of the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Watkins and was a member of the Catholic Aid Association. He was also a former secretary of the St. Joseph Rod and Gun Club. His hobbies included deer hunting, fishing, gardening, wood cutting, and reading western novels. He enjoyed baseball, playing the harmonica, singing old German songs and making wine. Eugene was skilled at sharpening saw blades and knifes and he also knitted socks and gloves for himself and sold them to others. His wife Olivia passed away on April 16, 2002.
Eugene is survived by his children and their spouses, Pauline Stein of Watkins, Jeannette Schwegel of Great Falls, MT, Veronica and Donald Gill of Durbin, ND, Joe and Donna Schwegel of St. Cloud, Betty and Leonard Walz of St. Joseph, John and Marilyn Schwegel of St. Cloud, Esther and Julius Langner of Rice, Susan Boisjolie of Le Sueur, Charles and Reggie Schwegel of Eden Valley, Alvin and Leah Schwegel of Watkins, Helen Williams of Watkins; about 50 grandchildren, over 40 great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren; brother and sisters and their spouses, William Bill and Bernice Schwegel of St. Cloud, Loretta Feldhous of Rockville, Mary Murphy of Albany.

Doris Teresa Busse was born in Cottonwood County, rural Sanborn, MN to Herman and Augusta (Ork) Busse. She married Alfred Engel on September 24, 1940 at Zion Lutheran Church, Sanborn, MN. During the first 26 years of marriage they farmed in the rural Springfield and Comfrey areas.
She is survived by her daughters, Gloria (Jim) Thomsen of Walker, MN, Donna (Loren) Wing of Springfield, MN, Ronald (Cindy) Engel of Madison, WI; 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Eleanor Busse of Richfield, MN, and Edna Veenstra of Springfield, MN; many nieces and nephews.

Theresa was born in Roscoe, MN to John and Veronica (Ley) Niewind. She married Ben Blasius on October 24, 1938 in St. Agnes Church, Roscoe. Theresa was a homemaker, babysitter and she also worked for OTC (Opportunity Training Center). She liked making rosaries, baking apple pies, cooking, gardening, playing cards and dancing. Theresa made history as being the longest resident of the Assumption Home. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, and was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Parish and Christian Women.
Survivors include her brother, Bernard (Natalie) Niewind; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben (1969); parents; siblings, Albin, Alphonse and Sally Fink.
William Bill W. Kinney, age 72

William Bill W. Kinney, 72 of Cold Spring, formerly of the St. Cloud area, passed away on Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at the Assumption Home in Cold Spring. Memorial services were held on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at 1:00 pm at the Ertl Funeral Home in Watkins. Kathleen Sogge officiated. Interment will be private. Arrangements were by the Ertl Funeral Home, Watkins.
William Bill W. Kinney was born on September 19, 1937 at Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was the son of George and Mildred Kinney. William resided in Minneapolis and had been employed with Honeywell and Toro Equipment. After retirement he resided in the St. Cloud area and worked at Sams Club and Cub Foods. His hobbies included fishing, bowling, playing cribbage and he enjoyed watching CNN and The History Channel on television. William was a supporter of the Humane Society and was fond of Black Lab dogs, especially his dog Duke.
William is survived by his children and their spouses, Kathy Kinney of Washington, Patrick Kinney of Minnetonka, Renae and Dean Stewart of Watkins, Jen Gertken of Watkins, Nicholas and Kate Kinney of Washington DC; and 4 grandchildren; sisters, Bonnie and Shirley. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Don.

He farmed all his life; enjoyed fishing, gardening, and playing cards. He loved spending time with his family especially with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of Holy Cross Parish and Catholic Aid Association.

Memorial Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Cold Spring, MN for Barbara Salzl, age 69, who passed on to her garden in heaven on Easter Sunday at her home surrounded by her family.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at the Wenner Funeral Home in Cold Spring.
Barb was born in Melrose, MN to Anthony “Tony” and Mabel Tiemann. She married Vernon P. Salzl on October 10, 1959, and shortly thereafter moved to Cold Spring, where they enjoyed living by the lake. Barb was a longtime employee of Dayton’s/Marshall Field’s, where she made many good friends. She loved to garden and proudly passed this passion on to her children. Barb was an avid reader who shared her enthusiasm for books with family, friends and her book club. She was also an awesome grandmother and loved her grandchildren so very, very much. Barb was taken from us too soon by ovarian and meningial cancers. She confronted her illness with amazing strength and courage and inspired all with her hope and determination to the very end. We were blessed to have 18 months after her initial diagnosis, to share her love, sometimes in ways that she only recently discovered. We are so happy that she became such a good hugger.
She is survived by her husband of fifty years, Vernon P. Salzl, her children, Lorrie Salzl Seylar (Doug) of Wayzata, MN, Lisa Salzl (Scott Foote) of Plymouth, MN, Greg Salzl (RuthAnn) of Spokane, WA, Dean Salzl (Sharon) of Cold Spring, MN, and Kurt Salzl (Gina) of Cold Spring, MN; her ten grandchildren, John Seylar, Peter Seylar, Isaac Foote, Ian Foote, Emily Salzl, Erica Salzl, Grant Salzl, Nicolas Salzl, Nathan Salzl and Cecilia Salzl; her brother and sisters, Tony (Adeline) Tiemann of Egan, MN, Diane (Sonny) Rodenwald of Albany, MN and Cathy Koopmeiners of Melrose, MN; her “honorary sisters,” Donna Ramler, Sally Thelen, Marilyn Brinkman, Rita Meyer, Carol Mehr, Joyce Wimmer, Lois Holmes, and Shari Salzl; special niece, Barb Weber; and all the rest of the extended Tiemann and Salzl families.

Jerry served in the United States Army Reserves for 25 + years. He worked for the Stearns County Highway Department and was a building inspector for Wakefield Township for many years. Jerry enjoyed hunting, fishing, spoiling his grandchildren and traveling. He was a member of St. Boniface Parish, Catholic Order of Foresters and the Cold Spring American Legion.

Marlin liked hunting, fishing, woodworking, and golfing. He served in the United States Air Force as a pilot during World War II and worked at Franklin Manufacturing for 39 years. Marlin was a member of St. Boniface Parish, St. Cloud VFW Post #428 and Waite Park American Legion Post #428.

Duane was born February 12, 1972 in St. Cloud, MN to Eugene and Bernice (Kascht) Heinen. He was a 1990 graduate of Rocori High School and a graduate of the Alexandria Technical College Law Enforcement program. On September 16, 2005 Duane was united in marriage to Audrey Nieters in Cold Spring, MN. Duane was employed as a police officer for the City of Cold Spring for 11 years. He served in the United States Army Reserves, the Army National Guard and the United States Air Force Reserves. Duane was a member of River of Life Assembly of God Church, Cold Spring, MN. Duane loved spending time with his family, especially his two girls, Audrey and Hope, and was an avid hunter.

Ted was born in St. Joseph, MN to Joseph and Mary (Meyer) Schwegel. He married Dolores Theisen on May 13, 1952 in St. Boniface Church, Cold Spring. Ted worked at the Cold Spring Granite Company and the I-94 Rest Area near Avon. He enjoyed working in his Wood Shop and was especially proud of his replicas of the Assumption “Grasshopper” Chapel. Ted also enjoyed gardening, traveling and playing cards. He was a member of the American Legion Post #455 and a lifetime member and past Grand Knight of the Cold Spring Knights of Columbus. He also was a past Cub-Master of Pack #15 in Cold Spring. On Veterans Day in 1999 Ted received his High School Diploma from ROCORI High School.
Survivors include his wife, Dolores; children, Dianne (Charlie) Ledbetter of Little Falls, Rose (Steve) Underhilll of Bloomington, Doris (Roger) Lodermeier of Sartell, Peter (Nancy) Schwegel of St. Cloud, and Deb (Jim) Rasmusson of Pennock; 15grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Eugene Schwegel of Cold Spring, William (Bernice) Schwegel of St. Cloud; Loretta Feldhaus of Rockville , Mary “Girlie” Murphy of Albany.

Martin was born in Meire Grove, MN to Frank and Catherine (Mohr) Dierkhising. As a boy growing up during the Great Depression, he developed a strong work ethic that stayed with him his entire life. He loved to help his Uncle Pete in the Meire Grove blacksmith shop, where he learned to fabricate and fix virtually anything. As a testament to his skills, he wired his family’s house for electricity at age 11.
In 1939 he graduated from Northwest School of Electronics in Chicago, IL. He was drafted into the US Army in 1941, where he served as a combat engineer in the European Theater. In 1948, he became an electrician for the Cold Spring Granite Company, retiring in 1983.
He married Margie Thelen in St. Martin on October 12, 1948. They made their home in Cold Spring, raising 5 children in a warm and loving home.
Martin enjoyed hunting, fishing, and a good vegetable garden. He also liked to provide homes for purple martins, tirelessly fending off the starlings. Martin was kind to all pets. He was also known for making good sausage and smoking fish. More than anything though, Martin was famous for being able to fix anything. He would tinker in his shed for hours; bringing power tools, appliances and other sundries back from the brink.
Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years, Margie; children, Joanne (Val) Bednarski of Ramsey, Paul (Sue) of St. Cloud, Mary Kay Zwack of St. Paul, Kevin (Debbi) of Cold Spring, and John (Janet) of Cold Spring; 9 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, S. Rosalia, OSB, Millie Roering, S. Niceta, OSB, and S. Fabian, OSB; brothers, Joe, Tony, Herb and Al; infant sisters, Dorothy and Agnes.

Joel was born in Minneapolis, MN to Joel and Arleen (Gleason) Wing. He married Lavonne Wunderlich on April 8, 1961 at the Evangelical United Brethren Church, Faribault, MN. Joel attended Huron College in Huron, SD and taught music (K-12) for 4 years. From 1961 – 2000 he was in sales. After retiring in 2000, he continued to work part-time in various sales fields. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife, Lavonne; sons, Lonnie of Alexandria and Joel, Jr. of Huron, SD; daughters, Kathy (Ron) Grindeland of Howard Lake, Diane (Jeff) Schermerhorn of Bagley and Lori (Tellus) Waddell of Marvin, SD; brother, Jerry Wing; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 10 nephews and 3 nieces.

Joe was born in Willowdale, Kansas to Frank and Elizabeth (Geisel) Pohl. He married Alvina Schreifels on June 15, 1937 in St. James Church, Jacobs Prairie. Joe loved his family; his grandchildren always brought a smile to his face. He worked for Franklin in St. Cloud and did carpentry work. Joe volunteered his carpentry skills to many of the jobs in the St. Joseph Church, School, and Rectory in Waite Park. He liked old time music, dancing, traveling and family trips. He prayed the rosary daily as member of the Legion of Mary. Joe was a member of St. James Parish, International Association of Machinists #623 Union, and a member of the Moose Lodge in Waite Park since 1961.
Survivors include his children, Leo (Joan) Pohl, Elizabeth (Phil) Schlangen and Linda (Doug) Yozamp; sister, Alvina Horton; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Edward was born in Zion Township, MN to Henry and Mary (Knese) Schaefer. He married Alvina Orbeck on September 8, 1936 in St. Martin Catholic Church. Edward farmed all his life on the ‘homeplace’. He and Alvina moved to the town of St. Martin in 1966 and he retired in 1976 from farming. In 2008 he moved to the Assumption Court in Cold Spring. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, traveling and watching the St. Martin Martin’s baseball team. He was a member of St. Martin Parish, Catholic Aid Association, St. Joseph’s Society and past board member of St. Martin Co-op.

Ralph was born in Albany, MN to Jacob J. and Alice E. (Sperl) Krebs. He graduated from Albany High School in 1941 and attended St. John’s Univ. for a year. He bought a chicken farm which he managed for several years. He married Elsie Thober on Jan. 25, 1947 in Mpls.
Ralph worked for Keystone Reading Service out of Dallas/Ft. Worth for several years selling magazines (with the assistance of 2 sales crews) throughout the United States – mainly in the South. In the early 50’s he moved to Mpls. and worked for Benson Investment Co. selling businesses. He then transferred to Cardel Business Brokers in 1957. He became a broker, and in 1959 created Globe Business Brokers with partner Robert J. Carlson, which dissolved at a later date.
He divorced; and then married Anita Faye McCoy September 16, 1970 in Watertown, SD. He started THE LOCATERS, INC. (another business brokerage) in 1977. During this period of time, he started buying and selling contracts-for-deed on homes in the Twin City area and continued doing so until 2003.
He moved to Richmond, MN in 1986 where he and his wife had built their retirement home. Ralph loved hearing a good story and enjoyed retelling it even more! He loved RV’ing, meeting new friends, photography, fishing, and reading “anything historical”.
Survivors include his loving wife of 39 years, Anita of Cold Spring; sister, Myrtle (Art) Vierkant of Wadena, MN; daughters, Diane (Larry) Brastad of Buffalo, and Jacqueline Molloy of Hampton, VA; grandsons, Brian Brastad and Jason (Sheila) Brastad; great-grandchildren, Katherine, Mitchell, Sidney, Ella, Ethan, Wyatt, and Kelsey and many nieces and nephews.

Trudy was born in Buckman, MN to Henry and Elizabeth (Mueller) Brausen. She married Jerome Kollmann on October 28, 1948 and was a devoted wife for 59 years and selfless mother to eight children. Trudy was generous and kind – always willing to help others. She loved spending sunny afternoons fishing or digging in her garden. Trudy will be remembered for her positive attitude and easy laughter. She was a member of St. Boniface Parish, Christian Women and the American Cancer Society.
Survivors include her children, Tom (Jane) of Tulsa, OK, Jim of San Francisco, Betty (Rich) Powers of Cold Spring, Sue of St. Cloud, Ron (Mary) of Stacy, MN, Bob (Laurie) of Kalispell, MT, Steve (Kathy) of Cold Spring, and Mary Kay (Mike) Krouse of Lino Lakes, MN. She was loved by 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Trudy is preceded in death by her husband, Jerry, (2007); her parents; grandsons, Anthony and Christopher; 11 siblings, Leander, William, Leo, Marie, S. Louista, OSB, Genevieve, Cecelia, Marjorie, Henry, Beatrice, and Alphonse.

Alfred was born August 12, 1929 in Richmond, MN to Nick and Theresa (Braegelmann) Rothstein. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955 in Frankfort, Germany. He married Elizabeth (Bertram) Hemmesch on April 26, 1974 in Lake Henry. He worked at Richmond Concrete and Rod for 10 years and the Cold Spring Brewery for 28 years prior to retiring in 1994. He was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church, St. Louis Knights of Columbus Council 3820, St. Louis Catholic Aid Association and Paynesville American Legion Post 271.
Alfred enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren. He was an avid hunter and trapper. He was an active member of St. Louis Catholic Church where he ushered for many years.
Alfred is survived by his stepchildren Alice (Herman) Schaefer of St. Martin, Janet (Donald) Schaefer of Cold Spring, Richard (Mary Ann) Hemmesch of Lake Henry and Donald Hemmesch of Albany, 24 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and brothers Gregor of Kimball, Marcellus of Richmond, Ralph (Evelyn) of Richmond and Nicholas (Margie) of Richmond.
Preceding him in death were his parents, wife Elizabeth (2008), brothers Norbert, Paul, Edmund, Leo and Richard Rothstein and sisters Aegidia Hemmesch, Leona Hemmesch, Lucille Rothstein and Agnes Rausch.

Kathryn was born December 11, 1929 in St. Francis to Joseph M. and Anna (Engelmeyer) Lehner. She married Norbert M. Buermann on June 19, 1950 at St. Francis Church in St. Francis. Kathryn was a member of the Christian Women of St. Agnes Parish, the Daughters of Isabella, St. Elizabeth Circle, Paynesville, MN. She farmed with her husband until 1985 and also worked at Tuck’s Café in Paynesville for over 30 years. Kathryn enjoyed flowers, quilting, bingo, fishing on the dock with her children and grandchildren and visiting with neighbors and friends. She also was a member of TOPS 1499 for many years.

Virgie was born on August 7, 1923 in St. Nicholas, MN to John and Rose Beckius. She married Al Steil on March 20, 1943 at St. Paul’s Cathedral, St. Paul, MN. Virgie and Al farmed in Kimball and Farming. After retirement, they moved to St. Joseph, MN and years later, Virgie moved to Richmond. Virgie was a devoted wife and loving mother. She loved, baking, cooking, entertaining, gardening, traveling and was an avid sports fan; most of all, she loved spending time with her family. Virgie, was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Church, The Auxiliary, Christian Women, Richmond Senior Citizens, and was a Crosier Apostolate.

Eileen was born in St. Cloud, MN to Albin and Leona (Scherer) Simon. She married Stanley “Pete” Jonas on August 21, 1951 in St. Boniface Church. Eileen graduated as a Registered nurse from St. Francis School of Nursing in Breckinridge, MN in 1946 and was a member of the US Cadet Nursing Corps during World War II. She was a nurse at the Richmond Hospital, and then moved to Chicago, IL in December 1948. There Eileen practiced general duty, industrial, and private duty nursing and worked at the Hines VA Hospital. She and Pete retired in September 1980 and moved to Cold Spring. She was a member of the Christian Women, VFW and American Legion Auxiliary, the Serra Club, the Cancer Support Group, and the St. Boniface Resurrection Choir.
Survivors include her son, Jim (Amy) Jonas of St. Cloud and her grandsons Jeff of Woodbury, MN, Jonathan of St. Cloud and Justin of Fort Benning, GA; sister, Milly Schoen of St. Michael, MN; her brothers, Leon (Red) Simon of Roseville and Melvin (Doc) Simon of White River Jct., VT.

She worked for the Sheriff’s Youth Programs in Wright County, T.O. Plastics in Clearwater and also cleaned homes. She enjoyed being up north and outdoors, playing cribbage, phase 10, bingo, and she loved to crochet slippers, hats, towels and afgans. Arlene touched the lives of many and they will truly miss her, especially her dogs, Spike and Snooks. She was a member of the Catholic Aid Association.

Brian was born in Harvey, ND to Robert and Theresa (Fettig) Hatten. He married Joanne Vannurden on February 14, 2001 in St. Cloud. Brian served in the U.S. Army Reserves. He worked in New Ulm for Kaisserhoff and Art Stone. In St. Cloud he worked for many businesses including, FDC and Merrill May. Fishing, Fishing, Fishing-Brian loved fishing! He was an avid ‘collector’ and a trivia buff. Brian brought a smile to those he came in contact with and was a member of Mary of the Immaculate Conception Parish.

She worked for Wacosa, Inc. for many years. Mary received her direct support from Nick Campbell and his wonderful staff at Empower, Inc., St. Cloud, MN.

Eddie R. Jokela, 90, of Park Rapids and Wolf Lake, Minn., died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, of a stroke at St. Joseph’s Area Health Services, Park Rapids.
A wake service was held from 5-8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 25, at Jones-Pearson Funeral Home in Park Rapids. The funeral service was held at noon Tuesday, Jan. 26, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Park Rapids. A military burial with the 10th Mountain Division Honor Guard and Flag Presentation followed the funeral service at Green Valley Cemetery, west of Menahga, Minn.
He was born Jan. 8, 1920, to Henry and Hulda (Wirtanen) Jokela on the original Jokela Homestead dairy farm between Wolf Lake and Park Rapids. His father died when he was 1 year old. His mother relocated to Montana for work during the Great Depression. He was raised by both sets of Finnish immigrant grandparents, then older siblings. He attended a rural, one-room schoolhouse through eighth grade where he learned the English language. From age 11 on, he and his 13-year-old brother Harvey lived alone on their mother’s homestead, learning survival skills. Together they farmed, raised livestock, hunted, fished, competed in all sports they could, and attended school when not distracted en route. At 17 years of age, he encouraged his mother to sign for him to join the National Guard. He then submitted his name for the 10th Mountain Division of the U.S. Army with hopes of being a military mountain skier. His qualifying criteria were tolerance to cold, being able to ski and fluently speak the Finnish language. He was one of the first 25 men chosen to the 10th. The earliest men enlisted are referred to as the “Founding Fathers” of the 10th Mountain Division. He was also one of 50 tapped as an instructor and was in three Paramount News Films about skiing. His ski training began at Fort Lewis, Wash., Mount Rainier, then moved to Camp Hale, Leadville, Colo., where he learned a more western way of wrangling livestock as he and another cowboy were in charge of 500 head of mules and horses. During his Army years, he competed in boxing, but was especially pleased to be one of 19 drafted (from 20,000 men) to play on the 10th Mountain Division's official baseball team. The team comprised many current major league baseball players including St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Famer Enos Slaughter. Assigned to Company M of the original 87th Mountain Infantry Regiment, he earned the rank of 1st Sergeant. Taking charge of more than 150 men, he was the youngest first sergeant in the entire division. He served in the Aleutian Islands against the Japanese, the Germans in the Alps of Italy, Austria and the surrender in Yugoslavia. After his second tour of duty, he returned from a hospital in Italy decorated with various medals that included the Bronze Star Medal, EAMET Ribbon with two Bronze Service Stars, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with Bronze Service Star, Combat Infantryman Badge, American Defense Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and Purple Heart. He married Lorraine Alice Luoma of Red Lodge, Mont., June 15, 1947. They purchased land bordering the Jokela Homestead and ran a farming operation. In 1949, he became an auctioneer. He graduated from the Reisch School of Auctioneering in Mason City, Iowa. He and his wife also started a traveling dance band called Swing n’ Sway with M & J. This group became a hugely popular regional band from 1954-1966. He was a self-taught accordion player and drummer for the band, while his wife performed vocals, piano and saxophone. They owned and operated the Jokela Sales Barn of Park Rapids, for several years. During a 35-year period, he was also the featured auctioneer at livestock barns throughout Minnesota including Bemidji, Thief River Falls, Winger, Detroit Lakes, Perham, Mahnomen and Park Rapids. From the 1950s through the 1970s, he conducted National Antique Automobile Auctions in Minnesota, North Dakota, Iowa and Wisconsin. As the founder of the Eddie R. Jokela Auction Co., he conducted more than 8,000 auctions in nine states during his career. In 1976, he conducted 33 auctions in one month and 268 auctions in that year. He was a member of the Minnesota State Auctioneer’s Assoc. and the National Auctioneer’s Assoc. He conducted auctions for the Northern Cattlemen’s Association many county auctions, including 4-H, charity, benefits and fundraisers for VFW, Ducks Unlimited, Humane Society and others. He started Jokela ProWest, which has produced more than 200 performances of professional western sporting events including PRCA rodeos and PBR bull rides throughout Minnesota and North Dakota. His hometown of Wolf Lake honored him as the first Commander of VFW Post 8510, nominating him in their Baseball Hall of Fame and asking him to lead the veterans in the D-Day Parade after World War II. For a number of years, he and his wife ran a daily cattle operation, conducted weekday and Saturday auctions, Saturday night band performances, and Sunday baseball games for the Wolf Lake team, or ski instruction at area ski resorts. In addition to their active schedule, they raised six children.
He is survived by his wife, siblings, Harvey (Gladene) Jokela of Park Rapids, Frances (Bud) Harris of Bend, Ore.; children, Randy (Denese) Jokela of Park Rapids, Jolene (David) Veo of Park Rapids, Jody (Nick) De Carlo of Red Lodge, Mont., and Peter (Deb) Jokela of Cold Spring, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Marjorie Marshall, Alice Helisten and Albert Jokela; daughters, Roxanne Bishop Magnuson and Rhonda Annette.

Shirley was born in Richmond, MN to Jerry and Elaine (Kuehnl) Eisenschenk. She married Joseph Molitor on October 6, 1984 in St. Boniface Church, Cold Spring. Shirley lived life fully and was a Christian witness to everyone around her. She was a devoted wife and mother and farmed along side her husband east of Rockville. Shirley fed calves, loved to garden and was a well-known volunteer in the community. She was a counselor at Birthline and helped to start the Annual Rockville Women’s Conference. She spread her love for the Blessed Mother by hosting a weekly Friday morning rosary group and making rosaries in schools and all across the state. Shirley was a member of Mary of the Immaculate Conception Parish, Church Choir, Christian Women and Consecration and Rosary Groups.

Marie was born on March 6, 1924 in Jacobs Prairie, Minnesota to Bernard and Cecelia (Doubek) Schmitz. She married Daniel L. Loso on February 12, 1947 at St. James Catholic Church in Jacobs Prairie. She lived in St. Joseph all of her married life.
Marie was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Christian Women, St. Joseph Senior Citizens, St. Joseph Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #5773 and the American Legion Post #328 Auxiliaries, and NARVRE. Marie was a daycare provider for over 25 years, decorated cakes and donated cookies every year.
She enjoyed playing bingo, casino trips, game shows, and playing cards. Marie especially loved cooking and spending time with her family.

During the war she worked as a housekeeper in a hospital in Minneapolis. She took pride in providing fresh flowers for the church during the summer months. Cyrilla was a world traveler; she visited every state except Utah! She enjoyed sewing, gardening, fishing and visiting with family and friends. She was a member of St. Agnes Parish and Christian Mothers.

Howard M. Dodge, age 69

Dodge, age 69, who died peacefully Monday at Assumption Nursing Home from complications of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. Interment will be in the St. Boniface Parish Cemetery.

Howard was born in Winchendon, MA to Earl Dodge and Viola Hammond. After high school, he joined the Air Force and was stationed in Duluth, where he met his wife of 47 years. Howard married Darlene on October 7, 1961 in Kimball. After leaving the Air Force, Howard moved to Cold Spring, where he worked at the Cold Spring Granite Company, the State Bank of Cold Spring, as a taxi driver in St. Cloud. He also joined the Army Reserve. Howard worked at the St. Cloud Post Office for 30 years retiring in 1999. His last years there were spent serving customers at the retail window in Waite Park, a job he loved doing. He was a member of St. Boniface Parish, Catholic Order of Foresters, Knights of Columbus, Catholic Aid Association and the Cold Spring American Legion.
Symptoms of a neurological disorder began in 1991, and Howard was diagnosed with PSP in 1998. His illness forced him to retire in 1999. Darlene retired soon afterward to take care of him. In late 2006, Darlene was diagnosed with cancer. The following summer, Howard and Darlene both moved into the Assumption Nursing Home, where they shared a room. Darlene’s illness progressed much faster than Howard’s, and in her final months, Howard returned the love and support that Darlene had given him during his many years of declining health. Darlene died November 10, 2008, and Howard missed her greatly.
Together, Howard and Darlene lived a life of boundless love, devotion and generosity toward each other and their family. Howard’s gentle spirit and his ability to see the goodness in life will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his children, Daniel (Heidi) of Monticello, Toni (Randy) Scheper of Lakeville, Steven (Marcia) of St. Louis Park, Joseph (Stephanie) of Oregon City, OR, Robert (Debbie) of Coon Rapids, Kenneth (Heike) of Little Falls, and Tammy (Brian) Ecker of North Mankato; 17 grandchildren; brothers, Bernard of Maine, Doug Dodge and Arnold Hammond of Arizona.

Dan was born in Richmond, MN, to Medardus “Dick” and Bertha (Phillipi) Backes. He married Vivian Landwehr on September 1, 1952 in St. Mary Help of Christians Church, St. Augusta, MN. Dan served in the United States Army from January 1951–October 1952 and fought in the Korean War. He was a welder in Minneapolis after the war before moving to Pearl Lake to pursue his passion for farming. Dan and Vivian later moved and settled on a farm outside of Richmond, which they developed into a modern dairy and Gold’N Plump Poultry operation. During Dan’s 40 years of farming, he was known for his innovative farming techniques. He retired from farming in 1994 to a lakeshore residence where he enjoyed creating things in his “well-stocked” metal shop, singing in the Maennerchor, working on his computer, and fishing. In February 1971, he pursued his love of flying and received his private pilot’s license later that year. He loved to travel the back roads of America and traveled abroad to Korea, China, Russia, and numerous European countries. He was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Parish, Catholic Order of Foresters, Catholic Aid Association--St. Joseph’s Society, Cold Spring Area Maennerchor (member for over 50 years), 25th Infantry Division Association, and River Lakes Days Committee.
Survivors include his wife, Vivian; sons, Keith of Mariposa, CA, Terry of Cold Spring, and Michael (Kathy) of Port Angeles, WA; 2 step-grandchildren, Laura and Scott; 2 great-grandchildren, Peyton and Danika; and siblings, Walter (Mary) of Cold Spring, Willard (Bernie) of Cohasset, MN, Allen (Marcy) of Cold Spring, Jean (John) Becker of Maple Lake, and Mary Kay (Ed) Cotter of Hanahan, SC.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Vera Scherer; and brother, Timothy.
