Jean was born on May 7, 1925 in Rockville, Minnesota to Joseph (Joe) Meinz and Theresia Rausch Meinz. Jean’s mother passed away in 1930. Joe Meinz later remarried, and the family moved to Madera, California.
Upon graduating from high school in 1943, Jean moved to Tacoma, Washington to attend nursing school. She eventually decided that nursing was not the career for her and moved back to Minnesota where she worked as a telephone operator. After a couple of years, she worked her way back to the West Coast stopping en route to work a season at the Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone National Park before arriving in Los Angeles. Shortly after her arrival in L.A., an opportunity to work as a telephone operator in Guam arose. In Guam, Jean met her husband Mack Savage, a Zurich, Montana native. Mack was in the Air Force and was stationed in Guam. They were married June 7, 1950, in Camp Stoneman, California. After a couple of years stateside (and a couple of children), Mack and Jean were transferred to Japan. The family spent most of the next 16 years stationed overseas with only brief stints stateside. Of all the places Jean lived, her favorite was Germany. Jean and Mack were tempted to retire in Germany, but decided to return to the States. They moved to Armington, Montana in 1971.

Jean was a kind, honest, and generous woman with a great sense of humor. She was a world traveler and a loyal Cubs fan who loved the outdoors, reading, and watching old movies. A strong Democrat, Jean had a keen interest in politics. In recent years, she enjoyed watching the birds from her kitchen window and entertaining a steady stream of visitors at her house in the “Mighty Belt Valley.” One of those visitors was Jean’s best friend, Betty Warehime. The family would like to thank Betty for all her support and love during the years. Jean was preceded in death by her husband Mack Lawrence Savage on October 16, 1996 and a brother, Richard Joseph “Junie” Meinz, killed in action in Korea on July 26, 1952. Jean is survived by six children: Jeffrey Savage of Great Falls, Richard Savage of East Helena, Tracy Savage of Lakeside, Troy and Blossom Savage of Missoula, Carol Savage of East Glacier Park, and Dean and Sarah Savage of Bozeman. She is also survived by ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren, as well as her brother, Mike Meinz of Cameron Park, California. The family suggests memorials to the Belt Public Library, P.O. Box 467, Belt, Montana, 59412. The family would also like to thank the staff of Peace Hospice for providing compassionate care during Jean’s stay.
