A new mural taking shape on the wall of Richmond Lanes is bringing color, history and community pride to Richmond while celebrating the many things that make the area a special place to live, work and visit.

The large-scale mural, being created by muralist Lauren Starling of Starling Artistry, features scenes representing the activities and beauty of the Richmond and ROCORI area throughout the seasons. From outdoor recreation and winter activities to biking, boating and the changing seasons, the mural is designed to capture the spirit of the community.

One of the most meaningful elements of the mural is a tribute to Richmond’s place in history as the birthplace of the modern pontoon. In 1951, Richmond resident Ambrose Weeres, with assistance from Edwin Torborg, developed an early pontoon boat using a wooden platform and steel barrels.

The mural project was spearheaded by the Richmond Economic Development Authority, which worked to identify grant opportunities and secure community support to make the project possible. The goal was to bring a large, professional piece of public art to Richmond without placing the financial burden on local taxpayers.

A project like this would not be possible without the generosity of organizations that believe in investing in the Richmond community.

A very special thank-you goes to the Richmond Lions, the Richmond American Legion, the Central Minnesota Community Foundation and Stearns Electric for their generous contributions to the mural project. Their support helped turn an idea into a lasting piece of art that will be enjoyed by residents and visitors for years to come.

These organizations demonstrated what can happen when community-minded groups come together to support a common vision. Their contributions are helping create something that is more than simply a painted wall—it is a celebration of Richmond and the ROCORI Area.
