There\u2019s an interesting debate going on here in Florida. Our governor has been telling lawmakers that he wants a change in real estate taxes. He\u2019s gone as far as to say that anyone who owns their home, and is a full-time resident of Florida should not have to pay real estate taxes. He was proposing that Florida abolish real estate taxes, especially for those over 65.<\/p>\n
There was, of course, pushback. Lawmakers started screaming bloody murder and claiming there was no way this could work, that there would be too many services that would suffer or be lost. They also claimed police and emergency services would lose too much funding. There were also arguments about how to go about this change, how to avoid huge, sudden losses of revenue for cities, counties, schools, and so on.<\/p>\n
Months of debate followed. There were several proposals presented for argument. The question will be on the coming ballot in November. I haven\u2019t seen the final proposal, but some of what I\u2019ve heard is a drop in the taxable value of homesteaded homes by $100,000 the first year, and $150,000 the second year.<\/p>\n
Something I find irritating is that opponents of this bill are spreading horror stories and attempting to instill fear in voters before the election date. We\u2019re being told there will be fewer police officers and ambulance personnel available when we need them. School funding will be lost.<\/p>\n
The truth is that the proposed bill won\u2019t allow the funding for EMS and schools to be cut, and we\u2019ll all still pay for those services.<\/p>\n
A while ago, there was a website that told you how much you could save if the bill passes. For my home, I would save nearly $3,400, so I\u2019d still be paying almost that same amount to fund schools and emergency services.<\/p>\n
After seeing the estimated taxes I\u2019d be paying this November, $6,800 (that includes an $800 increase from last year), I can\u2019t help but hope enough people say yes to this proposed amendment.<\/p>\n
Florida is unique in how the state and counties collect revenues because of tourism. Disney is a very large tourist attraction, along with cruise terminals and beaches, to name a few. We also pay tolls on many of our highways. All that considered, it makes sense that we shouldn\u2019t have to pay such high real estate taxes.<\/p>\n
All of us who are interested in this proposal will know more in less than two months. The proposed amendment has to pass by a minimum of 60%<\/p>\n
