A colorful new piece of public art is making its way onto the wall of Richmond Lanes, bringing together the beauty, history and year-round activities that make the Richmond and ROCORI area such a special place to live, work and visit.<\/p>\n

The Richmond Economic Development Authority (EDA) has been working behind the scenes to make this project a reality, securing grant funding and community support to cover the cost of the mural. Through the EDA\u2019s efforts to identify and secure outside funding, this large-scale mural is being brought to life without placing the financial burden on Richmond taxpayers.<\/p>\n

The mural is being created by Lauren Starling of Starling Artistry, a talented muralist with an impressive portfolio that includes numerous large-scale \u201cbig wall\u201d projects. Her experience working on expansive walls makes her a perfect fit for transforming the large Richmond Lanes 142×12 foot wall into a work of art. Lauren, growing up in a small town herself said, \u201cA mural is the perfect way to show pride in small towns, and they just make people happy.\u201d<\/p>\n

The design celebrates the activities and experiences found throughout the ROCORI area in every season. From summer fun on the lakes to our beloved hunting season, winter recreation and spring bike rides on the trail, the mural is intended to capture the spirit of an area where there is always something to do and something to enjoy.<\/p>\n

At the center of the mural will be a particularly meaningful piece of Richmond history\u2014the pontoon.<\/p>\n

Richmond proudly lays claim to being the birthplace of the pontoon. In 1951, Richmond residents Ambrose Weeres and Edwin Torborg developed what became one of the first commercially successful pontoon boats. That innovation went on to influence recreational boating across the country and has become an important part of Richmond\u2019s identity.<\/p>\n

Including the pontoon in the mural is more than simply adding an image of a boat. It is a tribute to the ingenuity, creativity and entrepreneurial spirit that has been part of Richmond\u2019s story for generations.<\/p>\n

The mural also represents what the Richmond EDA hopes to accomplish through economic development: celebrating what makes the community unique, creating reasons for people to stop, explore and spend time in town, and helping Richmond continue to be a vibrant destination within the ROCORI area.<\/p>\n

The EDA is grateful to the organizations and community partners who helped make the project possible through grant support. Their investment, combined with the EDA\u2019s efforts, demonstrates what can happen when a community comes together around an idea.<\/p>\n
