Watching the news these days makes you wonder what in the world is going on in some people\u2019s minds. It\u2019s too often that the reaction of some is to become violent. Whether that means physically or worse, with a weapon, it happens all too often.<\/p>\n
News feeds show us violence all around our nation. Recently, a young man with a gun shot and killed three people outside a burger restaurant in Idaho. He then shot and killed himself, leaving everyone wondering what his motive was.<\/p>\n
During this tragedy, a man carrying a gun was credited with saving lives by distracting the shooter. I guess that\u2019s an argument in favor of allowing people to carry guns. Not too long ago, there was an incident in the large shopping mall very near readers of this newspaper where a man with a knife stabbed or cut ten people. There would have been more except that an off-duty police officer shot and killed the assailant. Had that person not been at the shopping mall at that particular time, it\u2019s hard to say how many more would have been wounded. In this event, none of those injured suffered life-threatening injuries, but it could have been much worse if the assailant were allowed to continue. That event might not be an argument for allowing people to carry a weapon, but the off-duty officer\u2019s actions likely saved others from harm.<\/p>\n
Here in Florida, the law allows people to carry a weapon without a permit. That right became law just a couple of years ago. Although carrying a weapon is allowed here, I have yet to see someone with a weapon. Because my part-time job involves me being in charge of a lot of cash (taxi driving), I decided to purchase a small handgun to have with me when I work. Naturally, I hope I never have to use it, but it\u2019s there if I need it.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s sad, but I find myself purposely observing my surroundings when I go places; I note where exits are, and I always try to face the room, not a wall.<\/p>\n
I don\u2019t know if things will get better or worse, but for now, how people react has turned to violence far too often.<\/p>\n
