A Path to Connection: Supporting a Meaningful Outdoor Space for Memory Care Residents

In every community, there are quiet opportunities to make a profound difference—projects that may seem simple on the surface, yet carry life-changing impact for those they serve. At Benedictine Asher Haus, the memory care unit at Benedictine Living Community – Cold Spring, one such opportunity is taking shape: the creation of a safe, secure, and accessible outdoor walking path designed specifically for its residents.

For individuals in memory care, the environment plays a crucial role in their well-being. Something as familiar as stepping outside, feeling the sun on their face, or taking a gentle walk can spark moments of clarity, reduce anxiety and restore a sense of independence. Yet for many residents, traditional outdoor spaces are not always safe or accessible without specialized design considerations.

The proposed walking path at Benedictine Asher Haus aims to change that.

This thoughtfully planned outdoor space will provide a secure, enclosed path where residents can walk freely without fear of getting lost or encountering hazards. Designed with smooth surfaces, clear wayfinding cues, seating areas, and sensory elements like flowers and greenery, the path will offer both physical and emotional benefits. Research consistently shows that access to nature can help reduce agitation, improve mood, and even support cognitive function in individuals with memory loss.

But beyond the research and design, this project is about dignity.

It’s about giving residents the simple joy of movement without restriction. It’s about creating moments where a spouse can walk hand-in-hand with their loved one, where families can gather outdoors and where residents can experience a sense of peace and familiarity in a safe and carefully supported environment.

Like many meaningful community projects, bringing this vision to life depends on local support. Funding the walking path requires a collective effort—from individuals, businesses, and organizations who recognize the value of investing in compassionate care. Contributions of any size will directly support construction, landscaping and safety features essential to the project’s success.

Supporting this initiative is more than a donation; it’s an investment in quality of life. It’s a statement that, as a community, we prioritize care, connection and dignity for some of our most vulnerable members.

Benedictine Living Community – Cold Spring and Benedictine Asher Haus invites community members to be part of this effort—whether by contributing financially, spreading awareness, or simply learning more about the importance of specialized memory care environments.

In building this path, we are not just creating a walkway. We are creating a space for freedom, for healing, and for human connection.
