Oktoberfest: Family Fun, Heritage, and a Transformed Arena

Oktoberfest: Family Fun, Heritage, and a Transformed Arena
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Cold Spring Area Maennerchor OKTOBERFEST returns on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at the River Lakes Civic Arena in Richmond—and it’s more than just a festival. It’s a family tradition, a cultural celebration, and a stunning community effort that turns a hockey arena into a Bavarian wonderland for one unforgettable evening.

The transformation is nothing short of extraordinary. In the days leading up to Oktoberfest, volunteers work tirelessly to drape the arena in Bavarian blue-and-white décor, set up long tables and benches reminiscent of Munich beer halls, and hang banners, wreaths, and lights that instantly transport guests to Germany. The attention to detail makes the space warm, festive, and welcoming—a rare sight in Central Minnesota and one that’s worth the visit all by itself.

But the heart of Oktoberfest lies in its people and traditions. The opening festivities begin with the singing of the National Anthem, followed by the blessing and ceremonial tapping of the first keg. From there, the celebration fills the arena with the music of Tim Jarnot’s Polka Band and the spirited voices of the Cold Spring Maennerchor.

Families will find the event especially inviting. Kids enjoy games, contests, and dancing, while parents and grandparents savor classic German fare like brats, sauerkraut, potato salad, and delicious hamburgers. Everyone can cheer together during stein-holding competitions, clap along to the polkas, or join the dance floor during the evening’s lively moments.

“This event is special because it brings the whole community together,” said Tom Jameson, Maennerchor member and festival organizer. “It’s not just about the food and beer—it’s about celebrating who we are and honoring the German traditions that built this area.”

For one night each year, the River Lakes Civic Arena becomes something magical: a place where heritage, music, and family fun come together under Bavarian banners. Come join in the fun! Tickets Online or at the door.
