The Cold Spring Area Maennerchor will once again lend their voices to a cherished local tradition, leading an evening service at the historic Grasshopper Chapel (Assumption Chapel) in Cold Spring on Thursday, June 5, 2025.
This annual event sees the men’s chorus join the congregation for a special Mass held outdoors on the beautiful grounds surrounding the small granite chapel. The service begins with the rosary at 7:00 p.m., followed by the Mass itself starting at 7:30 p.m.
The Maennerchor will lead those gathered in singing the traditional mass hymns, filling the open air with powerful harmonies. They will also perform a number of their favorite songs, adding a layer of musical reflection to the evening.
The Grasshopper Chapel holds a unique place in local history, rooted in the devastating Rocky Mountain locust plagues of the late 1800s. In 1877, facing ruin, Stearns County congregations vowed to build a chapel in honor of the Virgin Mary if she rid them of the pests. Miraculously, around the time construction began, the locusts vanished and never returned, leading to the species’ extinction in the region. The current granite chapel, built in 1952 after the original was destroyed by a tornado, stands as a testament to this faith and deliverance.
Attending this outdoor Mass with the Maennerchor is a special opportunity to connect with both local history and spiritual devotion through the gift of song. All are welcome to join.
