During a City Council meeting back in 2017, Cold Spring/Richmond Police Chief Jason Blum announced that the new K-9 Patrol would be arriving and would be training/-working with Sgt. Jason Spoden. The cost for the new K-9 was paid by donations to the department. Chief Blum then extended his gratitude to Dr. Jeff Nelson of Granite City Pet Hospital for donating his services. Likewise, the department extended a special note of appreciation to all donors for the canine and to the program.
Shortly thereafter, Chief Blum reported that local public and private schools played a major role in the naming of the new Patrol Canine. Chief Blum said that each class from each school submitted a name for the canine. From that long list, the department pared down the names to three finalists which were then presented back to the schools for a vote. The winning name of the new canine was announced during a school assembly. And the name chosen by the students for the new K-9 Patrol for the department was “CASH”!
Fast forward to Cold Spring City Council meeting January 22, 2025. Police Chief Jason Blum asked Cold Spring City Council to approve the retirement of K-9 Patrol Cash and to remain with his handler, Sgt. Jason Spoden and to thank Sgt. Spoden for his “dedication to K-9 Cash since 2017.” Council approved unanimously.
Thank You to K-9 Patrol Cash and his handler, Sgt. Jason Spoden! Happy Retirement, Cash!
