Cold Spring Home Pride Lions attended the Minnesota Lions Diabetes Foundation Research Update Luncheon at the Kelly Inn in St. Cloud, MN on March 16, 2024. The Cold Spring Home Pride Lions donate to the MN Lions Diabetes Foundation annually. Several of the Lions in our club attend the research update every year to hear about the advances in treating, preventing and curing diabetes. We listened to some great speakers. One of many interesting things we learned about is Xenotransplantation as a way to treat diabetes. Xenotransplantation is the transplantation of living cells, tissues or organs from one species to another. They are researching the use of Pig islets for people with diabetes. The pigs they use are raised in a special sterile research facility specifically for xenotransplantation. Another interesting topic was one of the Endocrinologists from the U of MN shared research on how obesity may contribute to Diabetes. She has done studies on varying eating patterns and habits. Her team has found that a person can lose weight by fasting 16 hours a day and maintaining an 8 hour window of eating. Water or coffee are ok to have in the off hours but no soda, juice or alcoholic beverages. She shared that the diet sodas actually increase appetite. She recommended limiting sugar and eating non processed foods. You can decrease your chance of getting Type 2 Diabetes by making healthy food choices and being at a healthy weight as recommended by your healthcare provider. Raw and natural foods are best.
