Ernie was born on October 15, 1944, in Richmond, MN to Tony and Mary (Nett) Dold. He was the youngest of eight children and grew up in town on the “south side.” He was a 1962 graduate of St. Boniface High School in Cold Spring, MN. After high school, he served in the U.S. Army. When he returned home to Richmond, he met and married Marcy Schroeder on July 26, 1969 in Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Richmond, MN. They were blessed with four children.
Ernie worked for Cold Spring Granite Company in several positions for 46 years. He cherished his friends and co-workers there, as well as the many customers around the country who became his life-long friends when he was in sales. Outside of work, Ernie served on the Sts. Peter & Paul school board and the Assumption Nursing Home board, delivered Meals on Wheels, was a volunteer driver for the VA, and brought communion to and visited those who were homebound.
Ernie loved baseball and he was instrumental in organizing the Richmond Little League. He especially loved the Richmond Royals, and spent thousands of hours at the baseball park throughout his life; first when little, helping his dad transport large blocks of ice to the field on game days to keep the water cold for the team, then as a bat boy, then a player, and finally as a spectator. Ernie played three sports in high school and after high school he continued to play baseball and basketball for years. He also enjoyed golf, playing softball, and SJU Football. But what Ernie loved most was playing with his four kids. After supper each night, he would head outside with them and collect any neighborhood kids he could find for a competitive game of baseball, basketball, or swimming at Thein’s Lake. Later in life he found so much joy watching all of his kids’ and grandkids’ activities.
Ernie loved life. He loved God, his family, his friends, his co-workers, and the community of Richmond. He loved simple things like a glass of “cold, white milk”, a happy hour drink, a ball game, a drive around the lakes of Richmond, or the House of Pizza on Friday nights. He was a friend to all and he made everyone feel noticed, comfortable, and encouraged. He was always kind and he was quick to listen and slow to speak.
Ernie is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marcy; children: Christi (Mike) Bell, Jon Dold (Michele), Shari Sauer, and Nikki (Paul) Hannig; grandchildren: Jonathan, Katherine, and Elizabeth Bell, Bennett Dold, Brynn and Grace Sauer, and Luke, Ben, and Meredith Hannig. He is also survived by his siblings Donat Backes, Rita Duret, Jim (Liola) Dold, and Ann (Len) Guggenberger, and many special sisters/brothers-in law and nieces and nephews.
Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, Tony and Mary Dold; his mother and father-in law, Ben and Alice Schroeder; his siblings Art (and Rosemary) Dold, Jerome Dold and Mary Jo, and Mary (and Don) Wolf; and his brothers-in-law Porky Backes and Dick Duret.
Arrangements are with the Wenner Funeral Home, Richmond, MN.
