Eugene “Gene” Peter Schutz, age 69

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 7, 2017 at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in St. Nicholas, MN for Eugene “Gene” Peter Schutz age 69, who died Thursday at his home surrounded by his family.   Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

A gathering of friends and family will be from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the Wenner Funeral Home, Cold Spring.  Visitation will continue from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. Monday morning at the funeral home.

Gene was born in St. Cloud, MN, to John and Julia (Ehresmann) Schutz.  He married Judy Braegelmann on June 5, 1971, in St. Nicholas Catholic Church, St. Nicholas, MN.  Gene served in the U.S. Air Force from June 1967 – February 1971.  Gene worked as a carpenter his entire life.  He truly loved his craft, you could always find him in his workshop.  Gene enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, bird watching, and traveling.  He was an avid Twins and Vikings fan and was a master debater.  Gene was active in his church, a great role model, and taught his children a lot about faith.  He loved being with his family, especially his grandkids.  He will be remembered for his sense of humor, amazing work ethic and always putting others first.  Gene was a member of Cold Spring American Legion, Cold Spring Legion Honor Guard, Cold Spring VFW, Catholic United Financial, St. Nicholas Men’s Society, Knights of Columbus, St. Nicholas Church Choir, and Vietnam Last Man’s Club.

He is survived by his wife, Judy; children, Annette (Dave) Stang, Brian (Charise), Scott (Joleen), Deanna (Ryan) Hemmesch, Lori (Luke) Wendt; siblings, Donald (Gloria), Irene Abbott, Harold (Linda), Richard (Jan), Susan (Dave) Konz, Diane (John) Habiger, John Jr (Louise), Marian (Gary) Lahr, Arthur (Denise), William (Debbie), Katherine (Scott) Shafer, Kenneth; step-siblings, Ron Schroeder, Shirley (Joe) Dunst, Linda Straight, Jerry Schroeder, Ellen (Todd) Mohr, Tim Schroeder; Braegelmann in-laws, Mildred (Jerry) Janssen, James (Mary Jane), Bonnie (Mike) Mueller, Gerald (Lisa), Bede (Julia), Joanne (Pat) Porritt, Susan (Keith) Olmscheid, Charles (Lori), Roger (Stacy), Arthur (Wendy);  11 grandchildren and one on the way.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Schutz & Julia Schutz; step-mother, Esther Schutz; parent-in-law, Alfred & Dolores Braegelmann; sister-in-law, Kim Schutz; step-in-laws, Helene Schroeder and Roger Straight.
